Click here for a link to my thread in the other forum (not getting much response there). Any input would be appreciated!

I have an 04' F250 Lariat Supercab Short bed 4x4. I went down to Tampa last night to pick up my fifth wheel. On the way there I averaged 15.6 mpg between 70-75 mph. The fifth wheel is 8000 lbs and 31ft long. On the way back I averaged 9.7 mpg but got as high as 11.5 mpg. I almost didn't know the weight was there. It had plenty of power. I left the truck in overdrive and it never searched for gears or warmed up. I kept it between 65-70 mph. The power seems really good.

How the hell do you get 14 mpg out of a 460?

My brother had a '89 F350 4x4 with a 460, I rode with him once when we went to some mud bogs, about 80 mile round trip, and I swear that thing used at least 1/4 tank of gas if not more.

Is this the Stroke or V10?
ghunt- I have absolutely no idea! I think it's the only one ever built that gets over 10MPG. Auto trans, 4x4, with the air blowing 14 mpg empty on the highway, same as my old 351, manual, 4x4, no A/C did. It's got the 3.73 gears in it, I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Hate to sell it just for that reason alone, but with 2 kiddos now space is getting cramped inside the super cab.

It's interesting. Trailer Life did a comparison of some heavy pickups last spring ('08 models). They were towing an equal load with all of them (8000 I think). They actually picked the V-10 over the 6.4L PSD for towing, although they did say that if the PSD had the correct gearing it would make a huge difference.

With the dismal MPG figures the 6.4 owners are reporting (about eaul to a V-10) I would just get the V-10 and pocket the $6500 it takes to get a PSD .

Sure, but I'm not talking about buying new, not even close! 01-02 at the newest, most likely in the 96-97 range. I know that the PSD is superior but was more interested in whether or not the V10 would hold a candle to my 460.

It is bigger all around, and heavier. Much better built. Even with all the extra weight there is no question in my mind that the V10 will outpull the 460.

Well also keep in mind...'96-97 your only choices will be Powerstroke, 460, or 351W.

V10 was not available until '99.

BTW since you ARE looking at used...keep in mind that a truck with a V10, you could probably get a 2003 for around $15,000 or less.

When I was looking at used super duties though...there aren't many with the V10. Lots of Powerstrokes with automatics, and a few V8's here and there.

Sorry, It's the V10 with 3.73 gears.

I would personally go with the 7.3L PSD in a 99.5 or later, but then again I love diesels, so it's and opinion. I would say the v10 is going to be a better and more efficent engines that the 460's. 460's are great engines, but I would pick a 7.3L PSD over any of them. The V10 may have more HP, but the 7.3L PSD has way more torque than a v10, even the new ones. The 7.3L is a rock solid engine and will last for many years of abuse and pulling.

Yes, the V-10 will outpull your 460, using less fuel.

HP/Torque figures for model year 2000:

V-10 310 @ 4250 HP and 425 @ 3250 torque
PSD 235 @ 2700 HP and 500 @ 1600 torque

The 460 pumped out 245 hp and 410 lb/ft of torque (1995 figures).

Okay, good info! I'm definitely going to try and find a 96-97 PSD, but if I find a good deal on a V10 I guess I won't totally pass it up. Sounds as if the V10 will get about the same MPG as my 460 as well. I found a real nice 97 F350 4x4 crew cab with the PSD in it not to far from me, but the guy wants $16K for the dang thing! The hunt is on...

Yes, the Power Strokes are increasing in value because of fuel prices. The V-10s are actually a good deal right now.
