Wife's '06 Expy 4x4 (same drivetrain as F-150: 5.4, auto, 3.73, etc.) = 13 and change on avg. It may get close to 17 on interstate trips, but very seldom.
Dad's '05 4x4 Supercrew = same
Just for comparision: My '99 5.4 4x4 (I think I have the 260HP version) = 14 and change, but can get 18 on interstate.
All vehicles are stock.
Ford touts the new 3V 5.4s were to be more efficient and they are, but that does NOT mean better fuel economy. They make a hell of a lot more power, but maintain similar, if not slightly worse, fuel economy. Decent tradeoff IMO.

My dad's 04 gets 16 with mixed city and hwy, and can easily get 20 mpg on hwy trips. This was checked on the read out in the truck and hand calculated many different times. All it takes is easy acceleration.
I drove it on a 100 mile trip w/out a/c and cruise between 50-55 with light acceleration and got 24.6 MPG!
With a/c and decent acceleration doing 60mph it can get 20 without much trouble.
It is a 5.4 screw lariat 4x4 with 3.73 gears.

Granted the mpg hasn't changed with much if any with either modification.
I 'm averaging 19.5 mixed mpg.

Just took mine on a 200 mile trip last weekend. I have a 06 Lincoln Mark LT 5.4 4x4
The terain was flat. I did 100 miles with the Cruise Control set at 65 mph and the
read out was 20.9 mpg at the end of the 100 miles. The next 100 miles, I had the cruise control set at 75 mph,
and the read out was 19.1 at the end of the 100 miles. Average around town is 13.9 mpg.
I think for the size of this truck the economy is great
