As of right now, I don't see anything that the imports have that can compare to the HD domestic pickups (like the superduty Diesel). But if some one were to make a compairison between light duty full size trucks, its possible to see that toyota is closing the gap, at least on paper.
I know some one that owns a 1st gen tundra, and its a complete joke! the rear bumper is rusting away and its not even 1/16th in an inch thick steel (its about as stiff as a door panel), so don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I would be caught dead in one of those "toys", but never the less, the domestic market share is shrinking, and has been for years now.
Its not really fair to compair the tundra to the SD (SD is way heavier), but it still would be interesting to see how hand calculated MPGs compair between the two.

my 5.0 stick F150 used to get 12-14 MPG towing the same.
you do the math.

I guess I should put my money where my mouth is, it every one else is posting MPG #s.
My propane fueled f150 gets 14 mpg running empty at ideal speed (55 mph with OD locked out). Running empty at 75 mph, 12-13 mpg (many long shallow hills shifting between OD and third).
Towing a 20' flatbed again at 75 mph, 10 mpg (can't hold top speed as consistently when towing though, spend lots of time in third gear).
My diesel can get 20 mpg running empty at 75 mph (have also calculated 22 on ocasion).
Towing the same trailer at those speeds, gets 13-16 mpg (depending on traffic, and my disposition).
Never tested the diesel at 55 mph....
What sort of terrain are the rest of you driving in? Theres not much flat road where I am.

for my 1st 2000 miles averaged 11.7 rural and city driving towed 17k for 2,000 miles this summer averaged 8.726. now over 5,000 miles averaging 13.4 miles on the last two tanks hand cal. The computer shows 14.3. have not had a regen that I have noticed in over 3,000 miles. I do not really expect milage to stay above 13 but it would be nice.

My 08 F250 has about 8800 miles now and I'm averaging 14.5 to 15.0 in my small town (with no traffic lights) and rural driving on 2 lane roads empty. The last interstate trip showed 17.4 to 17.8 averaging 70 - 75 mph. It's definetly improved since new when I got 12.2 local and 14ish on the highway. My truck also has black tailpipes and smokes a little (black). Also, I've only witnessed 1 regen since new. I'm sure it has done more than that though. My truck is a crew cab with 8ft. bed, has perelli highway tires on 17 in wheels with 60 psi all the way around.

I have 22000kms/13000miles on my 2008 SuperDuty with about 1/2 of the mileage was with 5th wheel at 10600lbs GVW. My exhast pipes are absolutely clean and no black smoke evident at any time. I have used ULSD fuel at all times.
There should be no black smoke from your exhaust. It may show white smoke (unburn't fuel ) during regen in colder weather. I have seen three Regens on my truck. I have had several passive Regens due to trailer pulling with the engine at higher temperatures. Perhaps you should look futher into your reported soot and black smolke. It doesn't sound normal to me.

10,600 miles on the truck, going to be 4 weeks of ownership next week. Before it went into the shop Wed. 10.5, after the shop 11.5 mpg (this is 95% highway driving), with a 48 foot haulmark enclosed trailer stuck to my *** at all times.... This was after they replaced the radiator, and probably reflashed cpu as some people said they would.

Nice that the dealership has absolutely no idea on these new trucks...seems like I have to tell them about anything new for the truck

I still say the key to MPG on the 6.4 is getting rid of the DPF. Where your fuel mileage is going in city driving is frequent regeneration. Also, seems like everytime I pull my trailer I am going into Active Regen. Going in for the latest reflash this next week hopefull will improve the Regen frequency and the effects of it on the MPG.

2008 F250 6.4 Fuel Mileage
I have an early production 2008 F250 6.4. I transport banjos and luggage on long trips. I drive the posted speed limit and my tach never exceeds 2000 rpms. I have never reset the average miles per gallon on this truck. I have averaged 17.1 mpg since 21 May 2007. My truck has 34,000 miles on it and it is serviced every 6,000 miles at my local Ford Dealership. I have found if I drive it like it was a farm tractor, and let the transmission shift gradually, my mpg's are better. I traded a 2004 6.0 for this truck and the fuel consumption is higher on the 6.4. I have also noticed on the road, it does better without the cruise being set. It goes without saying but the heavier the right foot, the worse the economy. I carry only what I need on my trips so there is no excess weight. I think the longer I drive this truck and add miles, the better the mileage gets. I never let the dealer re-program my truck computer (recalls) until I have had a chance to talk with other owners who have, to see how it affected their mpg's. Hope this helps you out.

I have an 09 250 crew king ranch with 3500 miles on it. For the first 1500 miles I was averaging 10-11 mpg empty. Now I average about 12-13 empty. By the way I live in Houston which is no small town with heavy traffic. Towing a 5k boat I averaged 11 mpg. My wife uses the truck as a daily driver since my company provides a work truck for me. My work truck is a 2008 Chevy ext cab 2500 gas which loaded with tools and running service in H-town I average 10-11. This is my first Ford. I had always been a Chevy only guy. I sold my 2001 Tahoe 4x4 LT this year and wanted a truck again but chevy did not what I was looking for. I went to a local Ford dealer ship after liking how the new 09 superduty looked. When I test drove the King Ranch I could not resist. By the way the dealer said I would average about 12-14 mpg empty. So I did not buy the truck thinking of MPG.
