534?
Technically the 534 goes all the way back to 64. We have one in a 1964 C-600 Tilt cab Fire Truck. Even has a 5 speed transmission. It is true that they were only reserved for the large trucks. They also had a diesel for 66, but that's another story.

534?
Hi, The 401, 477, and 534 used in big trucks were refered to as "Super-Duty" engines. I don't know when they were first made available for the big trucks, but I know they had them back in 1959 in the F-850 to F-1100. There were also "Heavy duty" engines for the F-500 to F-800. They were the 292 HD, 302 HD, and 332 HD. I know that the 292 was a Y-block, but what about the 302 and 332? Were these Heavy duty engines part of the FE family? Just curious. Thanks,
Kenny

I don't know about the 332, but there was a 330 MD and a 330 HD in use in 64-66 that I am aware of. We also have a 1964 C-550 that has a 330 with a 5 speed transmission. (4 spd w/ OD) And it is of the tilt cab variety as well. The 330 is a part of the FE engine family, but it is not really widely discussed because it was such a short stroke engine. And only used in the heavier trucks.

I had noticed that the earlier trucks (larger) had a 302. I figured it was the 302 windsor, but I guess not.....
I'd still like to pull a 534 and put it in my 65 Ford F-100. Talk about a scream machine.

I often thought about that. That would be awesome in a pickup! My dad used to drive a 1960 single axle F-1100 with the 534, 5 speed, and 2 speed rear. He said even pulling a full load that thing was still a real "flying machine". My '59 shop manual shows the 302/332 as having the same block. They have the distributor up front. You're right. It seems like nobody mentions these engines anywhere. Maybe someday.

None of those engines are bolt-in replacements in light duty trucks, and none are "FE" engines. They are FT blocks, and differ somewhat from the FE castings. The most obvious external clue that you have a FT block as opposed to a FE are the engine mount holes. If each is drilled for 4 bolts, you have a FT block. It will not fit FE engine mounts, which used either 2 bolts (58-64) or three bolts (65-76) on each side. The FT blocks were also considerably heavier and used higher strength alloys. While some parts interchange between the FE and FT blocks, many do not.
The FT engines were made for massive torque, low horsepower, and reliability under extreme conditions that light duty trucks and cars never see. Their extra weight, poor throttle response, and low revving characteristics, combined with the need to make significant modifications to accomodate them, mean that they make very poor choices for anything other than the heavy duty commercial vehicles they were designed for.

LAST EDITED ON 21-Aug-01 AT 04:04 PM (EST)[p]Actually they are not even FT blocks but unique big blocks all by themselves. Their closest relative is the MEL series in design but it stops right there. The Super Duty or SD motors use a plank head but the block deck is angled even more than the MEL is. They also have a built-in oil cooler on the right side of the block. These engines are massive, I don’t think you could fit one in a pickup.
