Got my new tires....... How tall is a 32" tire supposta be ?
Thw UPS "lady" dropped off my new BFG all terrain tires yesterday and they looked great so I just looked at them breathin' in that new tire smell... They are supposed to be 32" tall but they actually measure 30 1/2" tall... WHY ! no they are not mounted yet-

It is best to go and measure the tires then buy online if you go that route! Hopefully this doesn't throw your gearing off too bad, unless your saying the old ones were the same size then all is good! Can you send them back or see if they will help you swap them locally if they are a big name mail order company they might have the same parent company as a big tire chain company in your area.

All the tire companies do this. I saw an artical in "Offroad" on this subject a few years back. They went and measured a whole bunch of mounted tires. All were small. The Michkey Thompson's were the most honest. (But were still small). Not only that, there is a big differnce in the width of the tread for the same size tires. My Dirt Grip's are 2" wider than my old Super Swamper's of the same size. The companies all claimed that it is difficult to give exact sizes. Its funny how their estimates dont ever seem to be off to the low side.

I would say they will probably expand about an inch or so. You have to take into account, air temp, tire temp, rotational forces, etc.
When a tire is going down the road at 55mph, it is indeed taller than when it sits at 0.
Sidewall flex adds to the equation as well. Especially with these bigger "A/T" tires. Most tires are rated and sized at 55 Mph. I know many are going to question this and laugh, but those beings are just not in the "know". Look at dragster tires, I know there is a difference in those are supposed to flex, but I am telling you street tires will flex as well, just not the 8 inches drag tires do. Maybe do a search on sidewall or tire flex. and to those who laugh, maybe you better think about tire rollout before you laugh.
And yes, I do a little tire tech and racing on the side.
