getting an 08 soon, should i worry?

my dad is getting a new truck within the week (well, hes planning on it)

hes looking at the 08 PSD f250/f350s.... should he be worried with this new motor? between fuelmileage and potential problems? the dealer told him it would get 17-18mpg... i told him to expect bad starting out..

DON'T believe the dealer! Your dad will not get any where near the 17-18mpg they claim.

According to this forum...he should expect 12-14mpg. Don't forget about the REGEN. It kills mpg's.

Overall, he'll love his truck. He won't be happy with the fuel mileage, and he might not want to park his truck in a real dry hay field for a while, but other than that, he'll probably love it.

I wouldn't say he would never get 17-18 mpg. He's lucky if he does. It seems that people like me who got the 6-speed manual are getting better mileage than the autos. I've gotten as much as 18.6 mpg @65 in my dually. Mileage has been hit or miss with these trucks, they're all over the place when it comes to numbers.

The 6.4s have seen very few problems, other than a few reflashes since the introduction there has not been a total recall yet that I know of. There was an injector recall for a group of trucks and it was caught early enough to prevent major problems.

Hope your dad gets what he wants, these are some amazing trucks.

Fruth04, the truck itself is a work of art. Quality is better than anything out there in 3/4 ton trucks. Mileage on the 6.4 is still up in the air.

Yes, please everyone reading this forum, please go out and buy a new 6.4, today!
The more people that buy them and help Ford with their beta testing, the sooner the folks at Ford will get all the bugs worked out. Ford needs you!

Then about 3 years from now, when they’ve worked out all the bugs, maybe I'll buy one.

Geesh, you'd think people would have learned after the 6.0 fiasco.

Wink BS Meter Reading on Gas Mileage

I am glad I wasn't drinking hot coffee when I read the gas mileage claim - I would have spewed all over the office!!

I've learned tricks to get highway mileage on my 2008 6.4L F250 SD 4x4 Lariat to 18 mpg. I've been babying the vehicle for these past few weeks and have achieved 13.2 all-around. You will not achieve the numbers claimed by the dealer - they are a fantasy & nothing more.

That said, if you don't have any dealer/service incompetence that I've been plagued with, you will really love the truck.

Disagree with your attitude, this is the best vehicle I have ever owned in almost 40 years. I couldn’t be happier with my new 450. Ford did an awesome job on bringing us a truck we wanted. There are so many factors on fuel mileage. Yes I would like better on my 450 with 4.30’s that is over 9,000# mty and over 25,000# total towing. This truck was built to tow and it does a great job. Power towing and stopping is the best in the market.

We have an 08 F450 ambulance 4x4 at our firehouse and it rocks. If it would break, we would have broke it already.

From mile 0, it's been petal to the metal. We now have around 4200 hard miles on it and not a single problem with the Ford truck. It's only getting about 4.6MPG according to the lie o meter, but you have to consider how we drive it.

It's hands down the most solid ambulance I've ever driven.

If it can hold up in our hands, I'd say it would be hard to beat in civilian life.

Talking

FRUTH04 I own F-450 SD with 4.3 rear end I had 06 F-250 SD both with PSD in them 6.0L in my 06 and 6.4L in my 08 and I love both trucks I got 1,200 miles on mine and have not had single problem with it. Yes the mpg's are not good, but I didn't buy for mpg's. I bought for the towing of my 38TT bumper tow and wheel base. It pulls my trailer with out no problem.

well his current 5.4 superduty gets about 11 mpg so anything better i think he will be happy hopefully it stays out of the 9s and 10s, he almost got another 5.4, but im pretty sure hes going powerstroke at this point, which is what he needs, he craves power and the 5.4 was not the motor to have for power in a 3/4 ton, yeah they do okay but you need more motor for that big of a truck..... im sure he will have me on here looking fora chip in no time if he gets one... suppposively hes at the dealer right now hashing them down on price..... now.... the question is, what will he bring home...... time will tell i guess.. i will keep you guys posted i told him to stay with the 3.73s being he doesnt pull anything too huge..... just a few bobcats and 20ft snowmobile trailers

The only thing that is holding me back from buying one is that they have to take the cab off to do any major engine work.

Agreed 100% with firehawk

The 6.4 is a close relative of the 6.0, the 6.4 is what the 6.0 should have started out with minus the emission crap. But you go and wait your three years when ford builds there motor in house and starts from the drawing board, oh thats right you'll wait three years for the problems out of that one and so on and so on.

Good luck with the waiting thing, in the mean time i'll be enjoying my truck.

Don't buy it for the gas mileage. If you want mileage, buy a volkswagon. If you want the best looking truck inside and out, and the best pulling, riding and driving truck, buy the Ford. Yes, there are a few problems, but then MOST people that have bought the truck have had NO PROBLEMS.

Good Luck.
