I am looking at buying a 2009 6.4, what is regen ? The truck I am looking at has 3:55 gears, can I expect better mileage because of the highway gears. I have a very light foot and just use the truck for work driving and haulling materials on weekends I haul a 2600lbs camper and small utility trailer. I currently get between 16.4 and 18.81 on my 2004 6.0 with 3:73. Any advice ? Wait for the 6.7 ?

Regen is what happens when the truck attempts to burn out all the soot that the DPF has trapped. It increases the exhaust temps so as to burn up all the soot thus cleaning the DPF. Happens on average, once per tank on normal driving, more if you tow.

Also affects the mileage of the vehicle. How much so depends on the vehicle. Some have seen a drop of 3-4MPG others more.

As for waiting for the 6.7, remember, it's a brand new engine design with brand new problems. It will have the DPF like the 6.4 engines or any other modern diesel so it to will be affected.

Regeneration SUCKS! I didn't know anything about it before I got my 08. If I had I may have thought twice. You'll never get 16 to 18 with these trucks, unless you're on the highway going cross country or on a very long trip, and even then its iffy. With that being said, these trucks are animals when it comes to towing! If you do alot of towing I'd say the 6.4 is a good investment, if it's more a daily driver and you're worried about mpg's, I'd say without a doubt, wait for the 6.7. Sure it's a new truck with new problems, but if ford is only doing the 6.4 for two years, that tells me their not impressed with something and they feel there is something better. Don't get me wrong, I love my 08 now that I tuned it, but I feel that you shouldn't have to tune a $43,000 truck to be happy with it.
