Y-pipe ? I don't need no stinkin' Y-pipe !

So, after looking at all the various and asundry photo's of all y'alls y-pipes, I decided to see what condition mine was in. Guess what ?? There AINT one ! My van has true duals most of the way back until the two join in what looks like a 3 1/2" inlet that feeds directly into the cat. From there there's a small section prior to the mufler, then it runs up over the rear diff and out the passenger side at a right angle. It looks like it would be really, really easy to just add a cat and a cat back system on the drivers side for true duals. BUT, would there be enough oomph to heat up the existing cat, and make it function ? Cool huh ???

Yea Jim I would bet your cutaway is the same. I was all wigged about the 'necked down' y-pipe like all the truck guys have so I crawled under it and looked. The joint where the pipes meet and feed into the cat look strong enough to support a battleship ! And like I said it will be easy to go to real duals if I ever decide to. I was reading somewhere that in order to get the same flow as a single 3" pipe, you had to have two 2 1/2" pipes, so maybe going to a single 3 1/2" would be less expensive and give better flow than a couple 2 1/2" pipes would.

It is a toss up. Duals look way better. Single pipe probably
sounds better on a V-10.

If you are not a purist, you can go 2-1-2 out the back of the
muffler or cat and get the sound and the look.

Of course the right cross over should do about the same thing with true duals - that may be the ticket!

A Motorhome with 3 inch SS duals - LOL! I suppose it would actually be a tri-exhaust counting the generator.

I don't see why not if the pipes are the same size. Might not hug the bottom of the frame, but if you have the clearance...

Will it interfere with the transfer case in us 4x4 owners?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Aug-02 AT 07:36 AM (EST)]Hmmmm. I am getting the camper tonite. If I can get a good angle I will try for a digital pic so you guys can figure it out. My guess would be the transfer case on a 4wd would be right in the way, but maybe the pipe routing is off center.

Is the case close to dead center or offset?

I guess I'm not sure what you mean by dead center or off-set.

I was under there last weekend changing the fluid in the trasfer case and it "slopes" down to the drivers side for the front drivshaft to go to the front differential.

Even if the van y-pipe wont work, one of my next mods is to have an exhaust shop "fab" a new one. That "thing" that is under there now is a clusterf#$k of piping!!!

I can't justify spending the $800 that Borla wants for their headers and y-pipe, so a fabbed y-pipe and a flowmaster muffler will have to do!

Any pics though would be great!!!!

I would think it would have to run right through the center of a transfer case. I know the system on my van certainly would. My pipes come directly straight back from the exhaust manifolds, past the tranny. Then the drivers side pipe makes a turn to join the junction with the passenger side which continues straight back into the cat, then muffler, then up over the rear diff and out the side. The joint looks like it's 3 1/2" or more where it goes into the cat and then it gets necked down to 3" to go into the muffler. The rest is all 3", same as what exits the exhaust manifolds. It would be very easy to just add a system on the drivers side to make true dual exhaust, but I wonder if with just 5 cylinders feeding the stock cat, that it would ever get warm enough to work, and more importantly; what will it sound like ? If it sounded anything like the first Vipers that had true duals and side pipes, I would be too embarassed to drive it. They sounded like a 63 6-cylinder Rambler with a rusted out muffler. The Vipers went to a connector tube to smooth out the sound, even though it helped a little, those cars have always sounded really funky to me.

I have it in the driveway now but after dark. Hope to take a look at the exhaust system in the morning.

Ok I need to figure out how to make a gallery, but my exhaust is off set down the passenger side frame rail (good news), but the driver side exhaust comes in at approximately an 85 degree angle (bad news). I think I may head into a muffler shop or speed shop and get them to make me some kind of connection that flows better and a lower restriction exhaust along with some chrome tips for the chassis and generator exhausts.

I have 2 u joints and 3 drive shafts to cover the 31' of length on my chassis. Never seen anything quite like that before.

Jim, I'd opt for 10 chrome pipes stickin' out of the hood like the Monkees car! Sounds a heck of a lot easier to do than 31' of pipe.

As for the gallery...Click on User Gallery over there. -------->

At thee top of the grey box it'll say Manage/Create your gallery. Foloow the directions from there. BTW, your first pic will be the one that shows up under your name.

Thanks - Guess it worked! Now to download the pics from the camera and upload to a gallery on the E-450 exhaust system...
