Question Stock 460ci Timing

Hello, I removed my timing chain and top pulley, I now want to put it back on but as I turned the crank by hand timing will be out, I know No 1 piston should be at TDC, and rotor in dizzy on No 1 piston, only thing with the bottom timing pulley I cannot find any marks what so-ever to line up with the top pulley which has a dot on one of the teath, as far as I know its a factory timing gear... 460ci is a early 80's- D9TE block, is it just a simple case of turning motor by hand so that rotor is on No 1 piston then putting chain back on ? Thanks Jamie.

dont bother putting the factory chain back in. its retarded from the factory. you can either go to your local parts store and ask for a timing chain for a 1970 lincoln with a 460, or go get an aftermarket multiple keyway chain and install it straight up. youll get better mileage and power with straight up timing than with the factory retarded set.

Hello darrin, for now I just want to put the factory timing set back to get it running, I have a new Ford Racing Timing set for when it gets rebuild as a 557ci, so any help on marks on factory bottom pulley or how to get it timed right for now will really help- Thanks Jamie, Australia.

ok... well just to get it running... make sure piston is at tdc on #1, and there should be a mark on the cam gear- make sure that points straight down to the crank. put the distributor in so the rotor is pointing to #1, finish putting it together, and then try starting it. if it wont run then you probably have the distributor 180 degrees out, so move all the plug wires over 4 spots. id say the simplest solution though is just put the new timing set in the engine, and buy a new set for the 557 when you get it done the factory set is stretched by now anyways.

darrin1999, As I did not remove the Distributor from the engine can I turn crank by hand and align rotor with number 1 piston then put timing chain back on , my 460ci engine has only 1'500 miles on it as I purchased it as a fully rebuilt crate motor so factory timing gear should still be like new... Thanks Jamie.
