I just purchased a 1999 F 250 Super Duty. I have read that starting with the 1999 models, the 5.4 engine was increased from 235 to 260 HP. But, my owners manual, which was purchased in March 1998, indicates the 1999 truck has 235 HP. The truck was actually made in September 1999. Is there any way to look at the engine and tell which engine version I have? Any help would be appreciated.

Real easy there John, Take your front passenger wheel/tire off (follow safe and proper jacking/lifting safety proceedures) poke your head in the fender well and with a flashlight look at the cylinder head casting numbers (they are on the passenger side towards the front just above the first two cylinders and are approx 1/4" tall alpha numeric) you are looking for the letters PI

My 99 Expy has it.

 

I have a 1999 F250 Lariat 4X4 and it has 235hp no doubt! I'm telling you, this thing is a dog! I had a 2000 F150 XLT 4X4 before this one which also had the 5.4L; however, it clearly wasn't the same engine. Believe it or not, the 150 was quite a bit quicker than my 250SD. I know one thing for sure is different. The oil filter on the 235hp 5.4L is more towards the back, and the 260hp 5.4L oil filter is in the front driver's side part of the engine. I will always remember what a pain it was to change the oil filter on the 2000 5.4L. The oil always drained onto the front suspension plate. The 235hp 5.4L doesn't have this problem. It drains easier!

All else being equal (gear ratios, motor, trans, etc. a 150 will always be much quicker then a 250 SD as the SD is approx500-750 lbs heavier then a 150.

 

What about swapping out the heads on the non PI engines? I heard somewhere that the cobra mustangs have the heads that we need to get more? is this true? I dont know i hear things just cant find anyhting to get more naturaly out of my engine.

 

The 5.4 was 260 hp in 99 but only in the F150's
In 00 they put the 260 hp 5.4 in the F250/350's

 

Thanks for that information. Do you have any idea why the 260 hp would go in the lighter truck? Seems like it would be just the opposite. John

Chevy's 5.3 has 275 hp
it's kind of like a de-bug and change over period.
The SD's got it the next year
I'm not sure when the vans recieved it thou

Nope.

All 99 f150 5.4L were 260 HP

Ford 'used-up' the remaining supply in the Expedition and SuperDuty trucks with the units 'running-out' in late June to July of '99

if you have any dought as to which 5.4L you have check the 'build' date and if yours was built in June or July of 99 check the head casting number to be sure

 

 

Can someone tell me how they got the extra 25 hp on the newer 5.4 v-8's . I have a 98 5.4 that's 235 hp. How can i get the extra 25hp without a chip or programer?

2. you could install headers, CAT back exhaust with new Y pipe, a FIPK, a dual 16" electric fan kit and maybe pick up most of the 25 hp
