You are suppose to jump the big post connected to the battery to the small post next to it.

From you description it is either the ignition switch or the clutch or neutral switch.

Uh!!! I just realized the column shifter is lose, and I jiggled it and it turned right over

I feel stupid now, thanks

Never got the chance to check fuel pressure today. . .

Curious, are the fuel pumps suppossed to be noisy? I mean, like old gear drive pump noisy?

I can't hear mine over my pipes. But when I jumpered them to test them I could hear both the front and rear pumps easily without the motor running.

Have the pumps every been run dry?

I would agree with assessing your fuel pressure. If it doesn't have a regulator I suggest go buy and adjustable one and fit it and while you're changing stuff you could put a in-line gauge just after the reg. Also check your needle and seats and bowl float to make sure they are operational.

Regards

Seats are good, as are needles and the floats are level. . .

Gonna go try again tomorrow to get a fuel gauge on there, also going to install an oil pressure gauge if i can find a good place to mount it.

Another thing to check is any/all vacuum dash pots on that carb. I ran into a similar problem on an '84 Chevrolet. The dash pot had gone bad and the Q-jet would either lean out when cold, or over fuel when hot.
