I've never done it myself, so I can't guarantee it, but I've heard that the rear disc's off of an explorer will fit all 8.8's.

Errh, I can't ever get the search to work

Can you just save me a little heartache and tell me what the end of the story was in regards to whether this works or not?

Only particular models & I have'nt found out yet which ones...

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...onversion.html

As I mentioned in this post, the way I found what I did was just going back page by page. It has been suggested to go out to Google or another search engine and use it to search ford-truck.com but I can't seem to frame my query correctly to be productive.

Also after this thread I called Currie tech support to ask what they were using for their conversion & was told it was a modified 2001 explorer set up to use the Torino bearing, which brings up a new set of questions.

Good luck, will be watching for your success.

There are after market backing plates that use explore or stang rotors that will have to be redrilled. Also the Parking cable & brake system is a mix and match of parts to get to work. But basically with our wieght distribution on trucks .
I'd just get a set of vented front rotor for front and call it a day . My friend Had a kit on his F150 (He died in accident) But He had a adjustable valve for rear Because he could get to work right . And with no weight on back it just slide tires or seem to do nothing any way. But I know of several on site post of installs.

also, you would need two spare tires.

Why's that? The explorer rotors would have to be drilled to match the wheel lug pattern on the truck axle shafts since the explorer shafts are too narrow for the truck axle anyway. Thus the wheel bolt pattern would not change.

Thanks EP,

using various combinations of, disc+brakes+conversion+explorer+8.8+site:ford-truck.com

yields me nothing but installs on 54-72 truck, slotted front upgrades, reveiws of explorer brakes & other non-apllicable listed tech articles. I can't seem to make it search the threads.

Don't know how log you lurked before joining or if you just read bunches of post like myself. But I've read & subscribed to every thing mentioning rear discs here & tried to keep an eye on the suspension forum as well since March 06 plus as far back as I could manually search.

Still no joy. I guess the correct year explorer brake backing plate will remain a mystery to me for a while longer despite how common the knowlege supposedly is...

Why do you want rear discs? The oem brakes are more than adequate.

Whenever I have to do brakes I upgrade to the best components available.

The only real advantage I see to the rear discs is if you go through alot of mud and water.

Scndsin, I know for sure that a friend's 96 V8 explorer had rear discs with an 8.8" rear. I'm sure this setup was not only used in 96, but I don't know the exact years. The rear discs could have started as early as 95 (new model was released in 95), and may have stayed the same up until Ford released the independent rear suspension-equipped explorers, maybe around '02.

Take a look at this mounting

https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...=60308&width=0

The design of the 95 explorer up till (?) is a rounded diamond till it changed to rectangular mount (As shown here) like what is used on the f-series 8.8.

This user mentions in another gallery pic that he had to use 2 right side hoses from a 98 explorer, but doesn't mention if the whole set up is from a 98 donor or not. I haven't been able to lay hands on a 98 part or pic to verify. I do have a 95 service CD with the illustrations showing the discriptions that I mentioned above.

My other 3 questions about the conversion are what proportioning valve was used? Was the master cyl changed out for a larger unit? (Pob'ly what Lost's friend's problem mentioned in post #6 was) And how the parking brake cable mates up.
