when i push the button, nothing happens, but i dont think its the switch because it lights up when i have my headlights on.

I'll start with the basic question... Are you aware of the shifting procedure? Press 4H first then to get in 4L put the transmission in Neutral and be at a full stop then press 4L. You should hear it shift and see the lights next to the buttons. If that does not work try the search under Forums above. There is a LOT about this subject.

thanks for the ideas.
After i get it fixed this time, im definitely gonna start lookin for a manual transfer case in junk yards, and then buy some premium warn hubs and just forget the whole electronic crap the next time it goes out, but i wanna get it goin again until i can do that
yes i am shifting it right, cuz it worked fine when i got it, thanks though.
how can you tell if the control board is out, and if it is where can you get a new one, and do you know how much they cost?

If you press the button (have someone else do it.) You should hear it on passegners side. As for cost ? I just keep them from my parts trucks in the spare parts box. I'd check to see if you are getting power to motor and go from there.
Did you take a wrench and work engagement shaft the motor sits on back and forth lightly? Its worked for me more than once.
Also the sensor inside transfer go bad.
If you do swap you will need all linkages ETC you might want to see if you can remove your self. My local yards just cut the parts out. I found out hard way then had to find linkage else where. (I now keep extra parts on hand.)
Hey good luck .

Fixing the transfer case to test- kick panel passenger side, remove the two wire harness attatched to the left side, push the white square button on bottom side of processor board(key on)-if the red light flashes this means u have problems with the acuator motor(shift motor)wiring etc(check wiring also ,the red light stays bright this means u have trouble with the processor board itself -good luck TR

automatic 4x4 has a mind of its own
Same thing happened to me this weekend while I was on a sand dune. I wanted to shift from 4lo to 4hi so I pushed the 4lo button and to my surprise it switched off both 4lo and 4hi.... I was stuck in 2x and when I pushed the 4hi button nothing would happen. After about 20 minutes of pushing buttons with no success, I finally got under the truck and tapped the electric motor with a swiss army knife and then it switched into 4hi. Later when reaching the highway, I tried it again switching back and forth from 4hi and 4lo and it was working fine. I dunno about this...
