Recurring Trouble Codes - 172 176

So I've had a couple CE codes that just keep coming back:

172 - HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean (right side)
176 - HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean (left side)

What is HEGO and why am I getting these codes??

I can't see how it could be lean if the engine is off.

Yeah it's a continuous memory code (happens during operation and gets stored in memory) that gets pulled during the KOEO test. I'm using a code reader that gives out a digital reading of the codes that are thrown.

Double check the o2 sensors wires and connectors, and also checked sensors for being tight. All good there. Any other ideas?

did you run seafoam through the engine.

new parts do not mean good parts.

try to get the store to give you 2 new sensors.

or bite the bullet and replace them.

what brand are they?

They're brand new, I said 8k but more realistically they're probably less than 5k old. I just can't imagine that they could be bad! They're Bosch sensors. I know that whole saying about how new parts aren't always good parts but these suckers are $50 a pop! I can't be throwin' around money like that. I'll see if I kept the receipt and maybe autozone will replace them.

Are the o2 sensors really the only things that'll throw the hego code? How 'bout a clogged cat?

i can't believe you go to autozone.

if you had a clogged cat you would know it, a very extreme lose of power.

Sorry, scratch that. I bought them at Kragen. Anytime I shop at autozone it's only for cheap tools (eg. fuel line disconnects) or brand name parts. But even then - very seldom.

Hmmm. The last time I ran injector cleaner/fuel additive it was Chevron Techron cleaner and that was ~5k miles ago. Why do you ask?
