Broke my Alternator

05' 6.0 w/std alternator

My batteries ran down so I charged them a couple of times then took the truck out of service. We ordered batteries from Exide and they were to be 3 days later with our regular stocking delivery. I had to use the truck so we charged the batteries and after driving about 15 miles the battery light came on. We installed new batteries and now the alternator won't charge and the battery light is still on. Can someone tell me the best way to handle this problem.

Beings that it is an '05, I would hazard to guess that the batteries were fine, but that the alternator was at fault from the start. Give it to the dealership, if you are still within warranty. If not, most of the auto stores offer pretty cheap, if not entirely free testing. And, if nothing else, you can take on the task yourself. I did a quick Google search & came up with one explanation of the testing...I'm sure you can find many others out there on Internet.

The batteries were stone dead.

We installed 2 new Exide 850's, checked the alternator, charged them to 100%, drove the truck about 2 hours (25 miles in town) and the batteries dropped to 58%. The alternator showed no output when we checked it and isn't working now.

We sell and provide warranty service for several brands of generators such as Onan RV, Honda portable & RV, Powertech, all Generac/Guardian, etc. but we don't service alternators. My techs could replace components in the alternator if they were available and they had a schematic.

The truck was an August 04' build and I don't know if the generator is covered under the 100K engine warranty.

Engine and smog related components are covered under the 5 yr./ 100,000 mile warranty at a 100 dollar deductible. I would check auto supply co. for a replacement.

price how much the alt is gonna be....most of the time you can put new brushes in them but then you still have to worry about the bearing etc...unless you were seriously hard up on cash id just replace it...most of the time with a re-man you get a 1-2 year warranty.

My alternator went out on my 2003 at 90,000 miles.

It is not part of the 5/100,000 warrenty, but is part of the extended warrenty.

Cost for me at local "fix it shop" was like $200 for a remanufactured alternator.

All is well now and I saved a bunch of the dealership pricing and Motorcraft parts. I believe that the stock alternator supplier makes the one's that our trucks were built with on the cheap... becuase it seems more and more people are reporting alternator issues (at least here at FTE).

Thanks,
