I am picking up a 89 VW Cabriolet tomorrow. I was just wondering if anyone knows of a good VW forum. I would like to find out if their are any quirks with this car, that I should know about. Thanks all
Plenty of quirks, but they are still a blast to drive compared to most Japanese or American FWD cars. My VW interests are old air cooled and newer diesels, I dont know of a good forum for you. I use TheSamba.com and TDIClub.com.
kwikordead...who used to be one of the mods of the '99-'03 psd forum owns a VW repair shop. i bet he would know or be able to answer some questions for you
Many Fox parts will not fit, the alt. shuts down when under 10 volts, don't jump start it when dead, disconnect cables and use a charger. The A/C compressor sits at the pass. side lower (?) and is the first thing hit when parking the car in a mall
Thanks everyone, I had a 80 Rabbit that I loved driving. I drove it 140 miles to work everyday for six years. The only thing I replaced was the alt. If I'm not mistaken, I think they made some changes around 85-86. Good or bad I don't know. I guess I'll find out soon enough.
Well aside from having to change every vacuum line, and timing belt.(just on gp) I think we got a pretty good deal. The guy wanted $2,500 I got him down to $1,500 No dents or dings just a couple of small surface rust spots. (orig.Owner)

If you have the 8 valve 1.8l motor, you've got yourself one great little motor. The only thing wrong with the VW's during that era was the electrical. They didn't like heavy rainfalls and little things like electrical switches tend to malfuction every so often. The one thing I loved is the relative ease to fix things on these cars, and the way you can get parts from much older cars that work in later models.
Sounds like you got a good deal on it, enjoy. that is probaly the only chick car I really like and would actually consider owning
Yeah It may be a girlie car, and if I have to wear a wig to drive it, then thats what I will do.
I think the first thing she is going to get is a good set of adjustable struts.
And yes it is the 1.8
I put the vdub on the road yesterday, and it runs and drives excellent. I have only one problem, or maybe not. At 60mph, the motor is running at 3 grand. This is the first
VW I have ever owened with an auto tranny. Do these #s sound right?
I am backing out some very reluctant bolts in preparation for removing the body from my '72 Bug project. Then there's the dirty job of removing rust from the pan, painting over with Eastwood encapsulator and chassis black.
