Horsepower Question

Hi All,

I have a 1997 F250 w/460 and automatic trans.

What are the Horsepower and Torque ratings for this engine?

What options are there fro increasing horsepower?

Power Chips, High Flow Filter? How much more ponies can i get?

thanks,
LesH

Don't know what your HP rating is but a programmer will get you about 25 HP.
You wont get much out of a high flow filter. Maybe 1 or 2 HP and a little better throttle response.

Hello all;

I may be missing something obvious, but I have a 97 with a 460 also and I have not found any chips or programmers on the market that do anything other than reprogram the automatic transmisions. In general all I have found for the engine is a few (and I mean few) options that can correct for significant modifications. If I am way off base here someone please let me know as I would be interested in such a thing.

I also have a auto 97' 460 the only thing that I have found that is even close is the "Jet Performance Ford Module" they make one for our truck, BUT they dont say what it does specificly for each motor. They have a throttle body spacer too and I wanted to buy them but I am not to sure that they do anything. Any else know anything???

Changing the question

Can anyone tell me how to check if what ratio is the gearing in the third member?

1997 F250 Super Crew 460 E40D transmission.

there should be a metal tag on the axle thatll give you the specs on it, and the data plate on the drivers door will give you an axle code you can look up. thatll just tell you what it came with from the factory though. i would say probably 4.10's if i were to guess though.
also, dont bother with the throttle body spacer- theyre expensive paperweights.

Thanks!!

For more torque....Should I go with Banks Stinger muffler package? The 460 seems to be somewhat of a dog at freeway speeds while pulling a trailer. Trailer weight is only 4000 pounds but it still slows down going uphill even in North Texas!!

I thought the standard gear ratio for trucks was 3.73.

I just put the Flow master "cat back" on my 95 460. It sounds better (Les like a school bus) and logic says that an engine that breaths better will build more HP, But I have no dyno results or time slips to back that up on this truck. My 97 Formula Firebird picked up a .1 in the quarter. I've also seen a few sets of emmisions legal headers around, but haven't bought them so I cant verify results here either. If you do buy a set, spend the money on good ones. They pay for them selves in the long run with fewer leaks and less corrosion.

I have a set of Heddman headers coming, and am sending them out to be ceramic coated. I will go with a single 3" exhaust with a large body Raven muffler. This is on a 97 F-350 Crew with a 460 in it. 6" lift, 36 x 15.5 Mickey Thompsons and its mint. I bought it about two months back, and frikkin LOVE it. I had a 95 F-350 that I timed till it pinged a we bit, then backed it off a teeny bit, and then put a single 3" exhaust on it with the same Raven muffler. It made a HUGE difference, and helped the mileage a bit. This new one with the 36s on it, could really use 4.56s gears. But, I keep thinking Id like to port the heads, and throw a cam with just a bit more lift and a weeeee bit more duration in it. Or, maybe build a 514 for it.
