Freight harbor Winch review?

I am considering buying this 8,000 lb winch from someone for $250.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=40764

He said it was used once, and is mounted on a 2" hitch. (I have a hitch recevier in the front)

I dont do any hardcore mudding, but I would like it to do smaller things, like pulling out jeeps!

unless its used for light duty work (pulling jeeps bein its max) dont waste your time/money. i broke 3 of them within 2 months and harbor freight finally told me they would not warranty another one.

I got a nice Champion 7500# winch as Sams clup for $298.00. I mounted it on my trailer to load dead vehicles. Works great.

Ever give a thought to why it was only used once?

I have bought cheap winches before and I found an excuse to always use them. I would question the "once" unless the vehicle is a trailer queen.

There is a reason why there is a $300 price difference between that and a 9k Warn.

Before you buy it, have it hooked up and pull a vehicle up an incline, on pavement would be fine. It should pull the other vehicle even if the wheels are locked. If it can't, the winch is smoked.

A few ****** blocks can make a cheap winch almost good!

I'd also check out 4wheelparts too, they usually run some good deals on their winches...

Really, that is all situation-dependent, so there isn't a yes or no answer. There is an "eventually, yes" but thats how most things are. They break with time and wear... some faster than others, and I guess thats what's up for questioning here.

Yes, it would, if you weren't buried, but how many times would it be able to do that? If you ever used it to pull you out of mud that was up to your axles, you would eventually kill it, maybe the first time, maybe a few times down the road.
However, for street usage, I don't think it would be that bad of a deal.

He had a few winches from his dads work, pulling up trailers. This one was used once to pull an f250 up an incline. Other then that, he said this one has been sitting in the garage. He was willing to hook it up and test it beofre selling it.

I have a #10,000 that I have used lightly several times, it works great, but if I had a long pull i would stop and let it cool often, just to make sure.
