93 ford 4.0 water leak

I have a 93 ford explorer water started leaking from the back of the motor on the top.can anyone tell me where this water may be coming from and if it is a simple problem to fix or does it need to go to the shop for repair.it never ran hot it just started leaking when i pulled into the drive.

I'm trying to remember the backside of my engine that I just reinstalled on my Ranger(Same engine as my 92 Ex...should be same as yours). It seems like there's a freeze plug on the back end of each head and there's a couple of freeze plugs on the rear of the block. There's no other external antifreeze lines, and the heater hoses are visible off to the side. Other than the freeze plugs, there shouldn't be anything else that could be the source of your leak. Hopefully it's a head plug. You'll need to pull the engine if it's the block plug. I suppose there's the possiblity of a head gasket leaking too. Can you get a mechanics mirror back there to see things better?

Lower intake manifold gaskets have been known to leak on these as well.

mrshorty is right. Best thing is to take it to a radiator shop for a pressure test of the cooling system.

it leaks to bad to be a head gasket so a freeze plug would be my bet as well.i appreciate your response.i thought that it was a freeze plug but i wanted to be sure.

If it is leaking on the passenger side, my bet would be the lower intake manifold gasket.

There is a water passage at the rear of the block that is prone to gasket leakage, have seen them pour out at a gallon in a couple of min. About a 4-5hr job if you do it.

You will need a lower, upper, tappet cover gasket, some hi temp RTV(O2 safe) and tourque wrenches(in/lb and ft/lb). Torx sockets are usfull as well.

Be meticulious when cleaning the old gasket and when setting the new.

Good luck

I think you missed the point of my post. I wasn't arguing for or against the plugs or gasket, but we can discuss this all day, and you can poke around under the hood all night, but if you want to be able to point directly to the leak, best bet is to have it pressure tested.
