yes but it sounds like junk to some. i am picking one up today with straights but it sounds nothing like the new diesels with straights. sounds like any gas motor with straights to me.

The new diesels sound the way they do because of the turbo's, if you straight pipe a NA diesel it sounds like a beastly gasser, it sounds good, with that nice cackle and everything but if you want it to sound like a powerjoke straight piped than put a turbo on it

I recently redid the exhaust in my 86 when I put an ATS 088 turbo pack in. I'm running a 3" pipe from the turbo to the tailpipe behind the read wheel. If you're inside the truck, there is only a slight increace in noise at idle, and it got quieter as the soot filled in. While driving lightly around town, there is very little change, you just feel a little more vibration. Now if I stick my boot in it, thats another story! Instead if a medium pitch drone like I had before, it sounds more like a monster, but I can still hear the turbo spool up. To be honest, I have mixed feelings about the sound, and may still get a muffler later on, but it still seems to get a little quieter everytime I drive it , so I'll wait and see.

PS, if you turbo, you won't regret it.

Cut the muffler out! I did that, have a dump pipe coming out right behind the cab, sounds like a beast! Really deep rumble, I have a banks turbo, so i've got the nice turbo whistle going too. Nice and loud, but not annoying loud, it quiets down at freeway speeds.

Forget it you guys, you will just **** people off and get tickets. Besides I havn't heard a rig that sounded good since a '55 265 small block with dual stacks.

Take it from me, fellas. Tinnitus sucks and will drive you mad, which is what you'll end up with listening to loud exhausts for extended periods of time. I have it in both ears, a combination of loud exhaust in my car and machinery noise and gunfire while in the Navy (mostly machinery noise). You don't want what I have. The silence is deafening.

But Matt, the crickets that follow you everywhere mean you will never be alone.

I think it is neat to hear crickets when standing in 3 feet of snow and the temp is 10 below zero.

I have not heard silence in 30 years.

Yeah, but mine are howling crickets with squealing brakes and feedback in their sound systems with occasional tapping on their aluminum storm doors.

so just a wild guess, y'all don't think loud pipes save lives????? LOL
also have reduced hearing from high power rifle competition and construction. was thinking about straight piping my '90, but think i'd rather be able to hear stereo at a lower volume instead and be able to sneak past the super troopers. (well, as much as a diesel can sneak)

Mine is an old Boeing 707 waiting in line for takeoff. Had it since 707's ruled the skys. Wouldn't be so bad if it were constant and the same in both ears.
Nothing beats the sound of a healthy and strong engine, but take care of your hearing!
