2001 F-150, mis-fire while cruising, 12mpg, help?

2001 F-150 SuperCrew, 4x4 Lariat...5.4L-V8, auto trans.
Super nice, truck bought it in 2003 with 80,000miles.
Truck runs great, currently has 167,000miles.
No major issues....I have replaced 2 coil packs, 2 alternators, brakes, etc.
I added bigger tires 285/75/17 BFG All Terrains, for meaner look but only get 12mpg, I'm going to the smaller stock tires this summer for the mileage....I hope....oh yeah, and ball joints!
I had the truck serviced a few years ago and asked about 'spark-knock', mechanic told me it was a small exhaust leak, when the truck is good and warm it goes away, after reading on her4 I think its 'piston-slap'.
Truck has always burned 1 quart of oil every 3000miles, Dad has 1998 F250 with 5.4L with 25,000miles, his burnt the same amount from day 1.
Anyway, I've been having some problems lately.
While cruising along holding any speed (50mph or 60mph or 70mph) the truck is missing, it feels like a coil failing...it's definately a mis-fire of some sort. Acclerating runs just fine, slowing and idle is just fine. But I haven't gotten an error code for the mis-fire....and will not give me an error code.
I did get an error code a few weeks ago before the alternator was changed (bad bearing)...."Closed Loop, Insuffiecent Coolant Fuel Temp". I cleared the code and it hasn't come back on again.
Additionally, from time to time when I use the remote start (aftermarket) the truck won't start, it will crank for a few seconds but not start. when I put in the key it starts right away (maybe security chip thing).(not really concerned about this but thought I would mention it if it would help dianosis my problem.

Any ideas on the misfire?

My guess is you need to replace a COP (Coil on Plug). I've done three of the eight on mine and just started getting a misfire again (138,000 mi). It's taken about a week for the SES light to come on. So now I expect that I'll be able to tell which cylinder is misfiring as soon as I can hook up my analyser.

I was actually relieved to see the SES come on; I was afraid it might be the tranny or something.

PS: My remote start has stopped working just like yours. Hmmmm..

Welcome to the forum UncleRedBuck

Your dealer has scan tools capable of finding misfires that haven't set a trouble code. They can do a cylinder power balance test to see how much each cylinder is contributing. This can also be done on the road if the miss won't show up in the shop.
They can also look at Mode 6 data on the scan tool which shows the number of misfires that have occurred in each cylinder.

make sure you have no moisture around the sparkplugs or it will cause trouble. I have 155,000 miles on my 2000 & havent changed a coil yet but have changed the plugs a few times but not that it needed them. Water/moisture had gotten down to the plugs & would make the engine stumble. (if you change the plugs, make sure to blow the dirt etc. out around the plug) I do not wash my motor or wash my truck with the hood cracked open. As on the remote starter, there should be a programed chip out of one of your keys with a wire running from a relay to the chip (wrapped around the chip) & back to starter box. The signal isnt making it back to the ignition switch to bypass the thief deterant.

ended up taking to a dealer and it was fixed.....for a week and it started all over again.
I ended up following the advice and instructions from other members on this website and replaced the plugs and found 2 COP's that looked like problems...so I replaced them.
Truck is running great.....

Thanks guys!
