Quickly engineering a new diesel engine for the Super-duties? I'm not an engineer but how quickly can one design a diesel motor? And it be dependable?
I can see the nice fat rebates Chevy and Dodge are going to come out with now to attract potential Super-Duty consumers.
If I'm going to be buying a 50-60K rig, I don't want to have to wait to see if it is going to be dependable.

Ford may have plans to release a new diesel, but what are the plans? Do they have one on the drawing board? Or is it a pipe dream? IMO, Ford is locking the barn door after the horse is gone. After the 6.0 fiasco, they shoulda started work immediatly. If they had done something...anything, the engine would be close to production right now. Instead of spending 6 billion dollars on Jaguar, Ford should concentrate and spend money for R&D on what sells. The idiots have taken over the asylum!
GM is developing a new DOHC V8...they expect the engine to be ready in 2011. 4 years hence, and it's a gasser.

Maybe Ford will give up the V8 thing, you cannot get a reliable V8 diesel to make that much power for 300,000 miles. It will beat itself to death.

Ford has the CGI lion series from LR 3.6 and 4.4 v8s.. I'm not sure how far it can be scaled up, but its going to have to be between 6-7 liters for use in the superduty as the big boy. I'm sure the 4.4 will make its way in there as the entry level diesel - high mpg option. We'll see what happens. New management is stepping up and saying enough is enough from navistar.
This isn't going to be until '09 or '10 anyway. I'd like to see a v10 or v12 based off that 4.4.. now that would be cool.

Um.... Remember that it's not the ENGINE that's the problem...
Just like every OTHER company that sells diesel engines in the US, they're having to jump backwards through hoops trying to deal with and fix problems in OTHER COMPANIES hardware. That's been rammed down their throats by the EPA.
And some vague itch tells me that this whole "flamethrower" episode MIGHT have been staged; or at least, the vehicle operated in such a manner as to encourage said behavior. Judging from how many folks around here saying they actually WANT that feature (in jest or otherwise), it's not too far a stretch to imagine this...
