Thumbs down How do you clean a mass air flow sensor?

I am getting check engine codes PO171 and PO174 (too lean on bank 1 and bank 2) on my 1997 Expedition and have read some of the threads on what to check. One possible cause is a dirty mass air flow sensor.

Can someone tell me what to do to clean this?

Thanks in advance!

Spray it with an electrical parts cleaner (leaves no residue) and let dry for 5-10 minutes.

Wet a q-tip with cleaner and gently rub.

Lee,

Let me know how it goes. My Expy spit those same codes out and besides bad 02 sensors, the Mass Air cleaning is next on my list. Everything else looks good.

Thanks!

Do NOT use Throttle Body cleaner.
Do NOT use Carb/Choke cleaner.
I wouldn't recommend touching it with anything like a Q-Tip.

Use this:

If you spray anything on the platinum wire/plate that leaves a residue and change it's heat dissipating properties, you have just created a nice paperweight.

They actually make MAF cleaner. Different thasn carb or throttle body cleaner. You have to remove the MAF. spray a few times, let dry andyour off.

Brake cleaner works great. Fast drying and leaves no residue. Some electrical parts cleaners leave residues as protection. Just have to find the right one.

I agree. DON'T touch it with anything.
