I dont know where some people get thier big ideas about dealerships and the price of thier techs. The tech is not paid that well in comparison to the door fee. Our dealership pays the techs an average of about 17.00 per flat rate hour. The hourly rate is 75.00 and that is only for one hour. They have a matrix and the more hours the job takes the more per hour they charge. So you could pay as much as 95.00 per hour. The tech however never gets more per hour. We have no salary or minimum. If there is no work there is no pay. We buy our own tools and that is an average 10k to 20k.
Still in the whole picture I wouldnt necessarily want to be the owner holding the mortgage on a 5 million dollar building with equipment, paying all the salaried workers on top of the tech salaries, insurance costs, utility costs, maintenance costs, uniform fees, etc.
They certainly are in it for the money and if any one of you could make millions of dollars running a business I doubt you would be "mister give away the farm" either.
Yes they all get greedy in time and many go under as a result. Sometimes they do something with that money to help out the communities they operate in that you never hear about.
We dont build the vehicles, we only try to keep them operating the best we can with the tools, parts, and reference materials avaliable by the guidelines they allow us to operate. Hopefully the bozos out there dont think a dealer who made 300-1000 dollars average on a new car sale can afford to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on each customer on non covered repairs out of pocket to keep them happy. We do what we can but we have to do by Ford motor company policies. If we call them and request authorization to do out of warranty repair and they say no, that is the end of it unless you have some magic wand we dont know about.
