Biodiesel Rocket

Watching the latest FutureCars on Discovery channel, I was amazed when they showed a High School project car that looked much like a Lambroghini, did 0 - 60 in 5.5 secs, got 55 mpg, and was powered by a 1.9 L diesel running on B100.
I'd bet this episode will run again watch for it.

So it was a VW TDI?

I can believe it if that's the case. They get 50-60 mpg stock and from what I read are just as responsive to computer tuning as the PSD. Put it in a custom vehicle that is lighter than your run of the mill Jetta with custom tuning and those numbers are easily believeable.

They are suprisingly peppy little mills. If I were going to purchase a non Ford vehicle in my lifetime, which is doubtful, I would go one of the TDI powered vee dubs.

Scott, my wife drives a 2005 Jetta TDI we bought about 2 months after I got my 97 PowerStroke. She drives it to work it absolutely loves bio. On the road average is about 49mpg we have not taken any road trip to see what it will do the only thing better is my Truck. Jeep1947

Yeah....geting 15-20 MPG better than any other compact is a very compelling argument.....and it'll run bio to boot.

I have been told that they are expensive to maintain, special fluids etc that push the cost of an oil change over $100.

Is that true?

The oil is synthetic castrol usually about $80.00 for oil and filter change. We bought it new and spent the extra $900 for all the service till it hits 50,000 miles. They change everything plus at 2 years they flush and change the brake fluid. Once I hit 50k I will do most all of it myself. I do all the work on my 97 powerstroke with cookies help. Now I just gotta find someone on the VW TDI forum to be my guru there. Jeep1947

Check this site out, jeep. http://www.tdiclub.com/ It's the VW version of FTE. Lots of good info.

We have an '05 Passat wagon, 2.0L TDI. AFA oil changes, 5 liter jug (holds 3.7) for 35.00, oil filter 7.00. I do the maint. on it, as well as the Exc. It's sorta an enjoyable hobby.

Take Care
