Spare Tire mechanism

05 supercab, new to me. Poor old 94 is just too rusty and sick.

Wanted to check the tire pressure in the spare since I'm pulling my trailer 300 miles or so this weekend, but the cap wouldn't unscrew. Bummer....but I should learn how the spare comes down, so Just In Case, I'll be ready. Figgered I'd take it out and get a new stem put in.

It won't come down. I stick the rods in there, and it turns easily each way, but I don't hear anything but the rod turning.

My search yielded no results, and after looking thru 30+ pages of threads of "what size tire" "cam phasers" "how many miles is too many" "spark plugs" etc. LOL

How does that mechanism work? Guessing it has a gear or two and unwinds that little cable. How do I remedy this? I suppose I can cut the cable to get it down, but to repair? I don't think I want the spare to ride around the back forever....

Thanks

You sure the mechanism is bad and the tire isn't just stuck up there from years of road grime hitting it?

Also some spare crank systems take a keyed socket on the end of the bar you're turning. You might have it up against the mechanism but not actually turning it. Get a good look in there with a flashlight and make sure it looks like the end of the crank handle.

alloro, no, I'm not sure of it...it's been down a few times, by the look of the tire and the rod.

glockholiday, yes, it's a square ended rod, and if feels to me like the rod is just turning in there, that it's not connecting to anything. A tow truck driver tried it, too; he was sure that the rod connected. But it spins easily like it's not. I picked the sunniest day of the year to look at it, would need to capture the sun in a flashlight to see in there.

thanks

My guess is salt and grime has jammed it

Get someone to crank it down while you pull down on tire . If that doesn't work I guess you will have to cut it . Keep it lubed later .
Same for emergency brake use it or lose it .
