Smile 351W Horsepower

I was wondering if anyone knows the horsepower rating for a 1995 351W.

I was also curious about gas mileage. I know it's not going to be good on gas, I am just trying to get a figure on how much I will be spending each month to drive.
I told my wife that I will come out better driving a paid for 351 that will do some work than with a 4 cylinder with payments.

I don't know TN laws for emissions or anything but you could always to what I did. I found an old POS Olds Cierra for $50 but a head on it and drive that to and from work. Doesn't look pretty but is cheap on gas and it saves miles on the truck. Just a thought.

That truck was rated at 210-220hp and can get 15mpg HWY if you're nice to it. If you plan to use all 220hp you won't get much more than 8-10mpg. Any 4cyl car will easily double or tripple that...trucks are like power boats, if you have to ask what milage they get, you can't afford it.

I've done the math a few times, and it still ends up less expensive to just drive my truck every day to work. Once a person figures out additional insurance costs, registration costs, maintenance costs, and initial purchase costs, it would take years to recoup those costs in fuel savings over just driving the truck. Yeah, you could buy a beater car, but all it takes is one $500 repair to throw all that fuel savings out the window. The only time a person can actually save money going to a more fuel efficient vehicle is if they get rid of the truck and purchase a car for only the amount they got for the truck or less. Otherwise, just drive the truck and don't worry about it. If your wife doesn't get it, show her the math on paper...

351 Fuel Milage...

Dude,

I've got a 92 F150 SC 8' with the 351. I've got a glass cap on the bed and carry (wild assed guess) 250-300 lbs of tools in the back of mine at any given time....I'm thrilled when I get 10 MPG. I live in the rural parts of West Virginia so my truck doesn't know what a straight stretch of road (more than half a mile) looks like. Oh yeah, there are a few hills around too.

Thanks Jasons95F150, thats the way I've come to figure it too. Everybody tells me I'm crazy to go from a '01 diesel to a 351 gasser. My payment went from just under $500 per month to $0. I can pay the extra cost for the loss in mpg with my savings.
I do have to ask about my costs because I need a full size truck to do my job and still put food on the table.
I just figured my mpg today and it came out to 9.9 mpg. hopefully a tune and some adjustments will get a little more out of it.

There is a thread in the Bronco forum right now and several Bronco drivers claim that they have seen as high as 18 mpg highway.

If you keep it tuned up, the tires inflated properly, and MOST importantly, keep your foot out of it, you should be able to get 15 or 16 pretty consistently.

Jalon, I drive mine like I have an egg between my foot and the pedal, keep it tuned, have a K&N air filter/Flowmaster muffler, and I get around 16-ish mpg highway and around 12-ish city. I had, of all things, a Suzuki Sidekick before my f150, but I wanted something to tow the boat I had just bought, and I didn't want to stress my wifes aging Jeep Grand Cherokee, so I bought the truck. This was right before the price of gas went from a buck something to sweet-god-kill-me-please. I had tough emotional problems filling the tank then. Now, when I destroy $30 a week I don't sweat it. Still better than making a truck payment. I figure I spend about $120 a month in gas. Tell me what kind of vehicle can you get for that a month...

I don't have this truck anymore, but sometimes I wish I did. I had a 91 F-150 reg cab long bed (with a nice fiberglass shell) with an E4OD and 302. When it was empty, going up I95, I got 17.5 mpg. Towing something was a different story, but we all know how that goes. I now have a 95 super cab short box with a supercharged 351 and E4OD. The supercharger is overkill when its empty, so it gets around 12 in the city. I dont have an empty highway number yet, but loaded with my small camper and all my gear, it gets 13 mpg on the highway. The guy I bought it from claimed 17 mpg highway empty with premium gas and a reasonable speed and passing habit.

To echo what has been said, I'm in the military, and have no plans to get something small for fuel savings. This truck is handy for moving around, and hauling all my crap with a trailer if necessary. Although I do plan to get a new truck when I make O-2... I like the new F-150s, and they seem to have figured out a great motor with the 5.4L.

.
My 95 only has 122K on it and it consistently gets 14mpg IF you keep your foot out of it (by that I mean not let the wife drive it)

You said your's is supercharged, I'm looking to do that to mine, what supercharger is on yours?

Its a Vortech V-1 Gearcharger. It was already on the truck when I bought it. The guy I bought it from estimated that it was making 300 hp. Its definately more powerful than the stock motor, but I dont think its quite that high. I have only heard good things about this type of supercharger from this brand, so I have no hesitations about the life of the motor. Admittingly, I am reluctant to mash the throttle down entirely for blowing a head gasket or something worse.

I definately understand the sentiment of using less foot on the pedal. With the 91 I had, that was how I got 17 mpg, but using very little throttle, and keeping it in the "good range" a lower speed in overdrive, before aerdynamic drag begins to increase. Hope this helps!
