What is this thing under my 2000 Ex Ltd, 4WD 7.3? It looks like a weight hanging from the cross-member under the transmission.
THANKS, Philip

Tracing device. Often used by the CIA or FBI.
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

It's a counter balance. If there's ever an earthquake while you're driving, this will keep you shiney side up.

I thought it was an anti-rollover device or a coon killer if you center them just right.

Whatever you do, don't take it off. Kind of like those labels on mattresses that say you'll go to jail if you remove the label? You know?

The blinking lights are just TV and movie hype.
The real tracking devices don't have them.

What ever it is i would follow Jones02SportTrac advice and just leave it alone. Ford doesnt put stuff on these trucks for nothing right? everything has a purpose.
VaSheriff i didnt even know that. You learn somthing new on these forums everyday

I believe it is a harmonic vibration dampener. After they design em, if there are any harmonic vibrations, they can just attach these things and make it go away. Sure cheaper than redesigning the whole thing.

I didn't know my truck played the harmonica harmony. You certainly can't hear it over the diesel.
Thanks for all the interesting thoughts! Housedad - I figured you'd know. Philip

Hey, I could be wrong...
For all I know it could be part of a reproductive organ.
It's in about the right place just in front and between the rear wheels.............
