transmission fluid change

I have read a few posts regarding transmission fluid change. I've read references to at least two different transmission types. My question is how do I determine which transmission my 05 F150 Lariat ,4x4 has?

What engine option do you have? 5.4? FX4?

That same piece was in my 06 when i changed the fluid at 42,000 and i called the dealer cause i was worried and he told me it was the plug that went in the trans dip stick hole and it is not needed. Take it out and throw it away. not needed.

So when do you have to change the tranny fluid. I have the same engine and a 4x4. Do I have to change at 30000. I have 26000 now and planning a long trip.

My truck is supposed to have the tranny and diff oils done at 50,000 kms according to the dealer.
Thats about 30,000 miles.

I also have an 07 with 5.4 and auto.

This is the only instance where I have a lubricant changed by someone else. After having done a few, unscrewing what seems like 29 screws, determining if the pan gasket is re-useable or not, replacing the pan and then trying to refill to the exact level that it was is a pain in the a$$.

I took my Expy to the Ford dealer and they have a machine that does it all. The best $129.00 I've spent in a while.

After all, you don't drop your oil pan to change engine oil. There should be a plug in the tranny pan with an external filter but there isn't. It's doable, Subaru does it.

Since this is a Ford board, I will reluctantly point out that another car maker who opened a separate division, recently killed off, that was named for a planet with rings around it, has external trans filter. We use ours as our toad behind our Winnebago with the Ford chassis. One would think that it would be easier to engineer an exterior trans filter just for the ease of maintenance.

Doing the trans fluid changeover today in our 97 Expy EB. Sure wish I had an external trans filter here, as well.

Subaru's have them as well. Makes plenty of sense to me.
