Question Exhausting Truth, cat's or not? Muffler?

Hey guys, after reading about 40 threads on exhaust I finally just have to ask afer reading conflicting reviews.

I put a 4" exhaust on my dads PSD today.... and after looking at his "resinator" and seeing what it really is and how restrictive, it got me thinking!!

1. On my EFI; Will tinkering with my exhaust benefit AT ALL??

2. - If so, what can I delete with keeping it as quiet as possible. Six's will NEVER sound good, no matter what you do to them. I don't want it to resemble a got dam ricer.

3. - If so, will it throw any codes?

Thanks!

Wink

#1. No

#2. Exhaust sound is in the ear of the beholder. On my '83 I have EFI manifolds hooked up to a Walker Y pipe running through a 3-in-1 super Cat and then through a high flow muffler I bought on eBay...all 2 1/2" and exhausted out behind the right rear wheel just like stock. Nice low tone with a slight "throb" and no ricer rap even at higher rpms.
But if the sound of a six is offensive to you may I suggest you trade it for a vehicle not a six or ricer. You won't even have to drive it. Just have it started up and blip the throttle a few times and when you find one you like the sound of, buy it.

f100guy, that link did not work for me.

Harte3, so you did all that work on your exhaust and you didn't gain any performance? I want to find someone who has an EFI-6 and has done the cat swap (high flow or delete) and know the honest truth if it did anything good.

I love the 6's, don't get me wrong, but they just don't sound good IMO, period. I'd have to hear this throb you speak of, lol. I'm just after any easy performance tricks for my EFI and as for what I've read there isn't much to do.

I have an '83 Fi50 with a modified 6. I had the exhaust work done by a shop in which both partners are also performance oriented. Their opinion along with another tech that helped me with the build all said the same...no significant difference whether I dualed out or not. The Cat & muffler I had put on are both high-flow units Since my engine was built for low-mid range torque and not for racing or rock crawling or the mud pit there would be no benefit in doing it other then the way I had it done. I have a smooth idle...the cam I had put in is not lopey but it's like I can still hear each cylinder out the exhaust...very low & mild. I could say it is similar to my daily driver...2004 Peterbilt ISX 565 Cummins...and maybe it sounds like that a little. I was not sure how it would sound when I had the work done so I told the shop if it was too loud put the other muffler inline with the first one and tone it down. Didn't need to.
As far as performance goes on a mildly moded street driver...only a before and after dyno run will show whether there is any actual difference in any particular mod...exhaust included....Just my opinion and not a disputing of those who may have experienced otherwise.
Your EFI engine will already have the EFI manifolds that are piped in to a single and probably 2 in-line cats. The "super Cats" are just one unit that handle all three spectrums of emissions so from that point out you have options like the single in, dual out muffler or Y pipe to duals with two mufflers or if one wants the noise...no mufflers for that matter. It may take some tinkering to get the set up for a sound that is pleasing to your ear. My set up just happened to work just right for me...nice idle and mid to upper rpm sound without drawing attention from the noise cops. My wife thinks it is too loud...go figure.

Take the cats off and take a rod to knock all the internals out and reinstall. This is the high-flo cat. For the legal way, check summit or jegs for the single high flow cat.

For the muffler, mine sounded really bad without it. I use a 2 1/2 in/out flowmaster and in my opinion it sounds good thru the whole rpm range.

Since it isn't a 4banger ,a v6 or rev over 5 grand, it doesn't sound anything like a rice rocket(maybe a john deer).

homenf, so did you actually do the cat gutting? Did it serve any performance gain?

i got a 91 f.150 300 efi, when the exhaust broke off, i took a really big drill bit and drilled all that bull shat out of the second inline cat, at higher rpms, it sounded like a 80s era non turbo diesl, i absolutely loved the way it rumbled down the road, actually, im probably going to gut the 1st cat, put a cherry bomb on it, and maybe even put some stacks on it

no, I didn't knock the insides out. I just ran without them. When the day comes that I need to smog the Beast I can put them back on without buying new ones.

I loved the way mine sounded with a high flow Cat and no muffler. It sounded like a 6-71 Detroit. My wife didn't like it much, though (she loves her Camry because it's quiet), so I had to put the muffler on anyway.
