Dealer says 6.0 is a 18qt. oil system???

I asked my dealer this morning if I came in for an oil change ,do they put 15 qts in or do they account for the 1-1.5 qts in the oil pump and put 13.5-14 qts in.. Dealer tells me system hold 18 qts. # qts stay in engine so they add 15..Is this BS or true story???

I'm not sure.....but I don't think the oil drains out of the high pressure oil pump, so only 15 quarts come out, so 15 quarts go back in. If it did drain out of the HPOP, it would take a long time to start after the change since the injectors run off of high oil pressure.

I'm almost certain that the injector oil does not follow the same path as the lube oil. It returns to the pan. The lube system, and hpop system are on different paths. Same Oil, same filter, just not the same linear system.

I hope that makes sense. I seemed to ramble on....Joe.

Sounds about right to me. most of the time I put in 15.5 to 16 Qt. After the change just check the dip stick. and see if the filter housing is clean.

mine averages about 13 qts. When I first joined FTE I read a thread from a mech in a shop and that is what he said was that it was about 13 qts since the oil stayed in the HPOP. 13 qts is right at the line one my stick also.

My vote is for BS...

I'd ask them if they measure what comes out, I've never had 15 qts drain, like you stated, that's the capacity but it does not all drain. They are draining into a 55 gal drum most likely, not paying attention to how much comes out, so it's important to check the stick. And if you overfill these, it's easy to miss it because once it's past the white plastic tip (on mine anyway) it's hard to read a level.

Per the tech folder here, 13.5 is about right, I usually put in at most 14 quarts to get 3/4 up the hash marks on the dipstick on mine, but either way I think they are wrong on the 18 qt capacity and 15 qt fills. If you let them do it, just be sure you don't leave over-filled!

13 qts gets me right in the middle of the hash marks. probably could hold at most another quart.

That is exactly where it needs to be. Miine always took 13.5...no more, no less.

With '03 / '04s anyway....in many cases....if someone put 16 quarts in their truck... they had surging issues.

I always put like 12.5 to 13 qts in mine to get it to the bottom area of the dipstick, And I dont want any more than that. Too much oil for the 6.0 is bad news. These trucks running to much oil are probly the ones losing injectors, high pressure oil pumps, high pressure fuel pumps, oil leaks. ect, ect....

If you pull the motor and drain it totally dry it MIGHT take 18 quarts to refill the whole system. Normal oil change is approx 14 qts.

15 quarts is the official refill capacity so its no suprise that that is what a Ford dealer is putting in. Theoretically, 13 should get you to the add line and 15 to the full line. We put 15 in ours after draining and never have a problem.

I would say it's BS. I just completed my 9th oil change & service (36,800 mi) & 13.5 qt puts it @ about the 3/4 mark on the dipstick. Also, my dealer said no more than the 13.5 qts.
