listed as "COVER AND CONT" on the invoice for my 5.8, should be the
same for 4.9
Cost: $143.58 at my dealer. It apparently can be had for less.
I caught part of Autoline Detroit program a few weeks back about a mfg. co that was going to start producing ford elec components such as this, that have untill now have solely been available through Ford. Hope cost/quality is good. It'd be nice to see a new source.

You can't get to the clock spring untill you remove the bag, Then the steering wheel. But the bag is plugged into the harness part of the clock spring which goes through the wheel. Contact ql2 as he suggested above & I'm sure he'll give you a concise set of steps.
I'd like to add that there should be a small metal clip in between the clksprng connector & the AB connector that "shorts" the pins of the air bag together. You want to pay close attention when you pull the connector apart to try & keep in there & note its orentation if it is loose & falls out. If you yank it apart it will go flying.
The clock spring is a problem with just about all Fords, much in the same vein as the ignition switch. Ford could build an indestructable one but its just not cost effective.

Rather than start a new thread I'll just ask this here.
I have the same problem on my 95 F-150 XLT 5.0L as well as a couple of others. I want to see if you guys think that these are related issues before I spend the money on a clockspring.
1. Cruise control does not work.
2. Horn does not work.
3. Airbag light is not blinking but does come on solid for a few seconds at startup.
4. No dome light when I open the driver door but does work on passenger door.
5. No chime for the driver door ajar but it does chime for the seatbelt.
6. No chime when I leave the lights on and turn off the truck.
Do I just need a clockspring and door switch or are they related, and is #6 related to #4 and #5?

Thanks for the quick reply, quicklook2. I checked up on a few things when I got home. I checked all of my fuses and relays, they were all good. I remembered that I unhooked the cruise control module when I got the recall notice (it wasn’t working then anyways) and they didn’t reconnect it after the work was done. When I reconnected it, the horn started working again but I still have no cruise. None of the brake lights are blown.
Could this still be the clockspring or could the module just be bad?

I did this back in June on my 94 F250. I got the clockspring from Advance Auto Parts for about 60 bucks (part #525200). It's listed on their site under "Steering". The local Ford dealership head mechanic told me to simply disconnect the battery, go have a soda to kill some time, and then gently remove the airbag. Essentially treating it like working on a computer; ground yourself to avoid static. Then, lay it somwhere out of the way while you change the clockspring.
Now, I'm not telling you to do this, I'm just relaying what I was instructed and did. I am very confident in my mechanical abilities, but remained very cautious and actually stood outside the door while I carefully removed the airbag after unbolting it.
My problem was no horn, no cruise and the airbag light blinked code 32. If your airbag light doesn't come on at all, I would make suire it still there, connected and not burnt out.
OK caught the rest of the posts (been sick lately and didn't read thouroughly) and decided to leave this just for the info. The clock spring is actually like a ribbon that's wrapped around a spool and can break individual strands within the ribbon causing individual issues.

@quicklook2
None of the lights stay on after the initial blink at startup.
@AFSOCmech
Airbag light comes on at startup and then goes off, so I know it's hooked up. It sounds reasonable that the clockspring might still be causing it, but I'm kinda leaning towards the module itself at this point. I guess it's down to just buying one or the other and seeing what fixes it. I just wanna see if it could be anything else or one more than the other before I take the plunge.
I'm pretty confident in my auto mech. skills, but this my first efi vehicle and first one that's this modern. My '71 and '81 Mustangs just don't have these types of problems ;-)
