?302 with a new 5 speed in my 1957 4x4
I have a 1957 ford 4x4 it is a short box slabside, and at the monent it has a 223 I6 with a 4 speed. this works ok ( not alot of power ).I want to put a 302 from a older ford car and behind that a newer type ford 5spd out of a F-150 . If any on has any advise about how to do this let me know please! and what would the 223 and the 4spd be worth?
thanks, Ryan

The block is the same, it should fit. I don't know about the transfer case though. I've got a 5.0 out of a 83 t-bird and a 302 out of a 60 something mustang and they look the same.
Good Luck
ps If you do it, I'll take the 223 off your hands.
I need it for another project.

They can't be the same block as one is an I6, and the other is a V8. Is this truck a Marmon Harrington 4x4 conversion, or does it look like a previous owner swap to 4WD? I had put a '73 302 in my first '59 F100 a long time ago. I had to make my own motor mounts and do some homegrown fabrication to mount the clutch slave cylinder. I remember reading a couple other posts here from people doing a similar swap, except for the tranny. I don't see why it couldn't work. If you had to you could always have a custom driveshaft made up to hook from your tranny to your transfer case.

Chris, I understood clearly that Ryan wanted to bolt an older 302 to a newer 5 speed, but I didn't see any mention of a 5.0 in his post. I guess I misunderstood your reply. I see now that you were comparing a 302 to a 5.0 and not a 223. Sorry about that. Is a 5.0 the only engine that comes with a newer 5 speed? Please know that I'm not asking you to be a wise guy here, I'm only asking because I really don't know the answer. Thanks,
Kenny

no, I was just thinking that If you are going to bolt a newer trans to an older engine. I would look for a similar block. I assumed that he would be salvaging a trans off of a 1991 truck with a 5.0 engine. I don't think that the 5-speed trans only came behind 5.0. I have used an aod that came out a 83 t-bird to bolt to an older 302 engine so I'm pretty sure that a 5-spd that is behind a 5.0 will bolt to a older 302.. I think that the 351w also has the same bolt pattern.
No offense taken at all Kenny. In fact, I appreicate your response.

Thanks Chris. One of my biggest fears on message boards is to be taken the wrong way. I'm always a smiling happy guy, but typed words don't always show that. What you said about finding a 5 speed behind a 5.0 makes a whole lot of sense and is very good advice. I appreciate the info also.

Ford also put a 5 speed behind the 351(5.8L). I worked with a guy who had 91 F250 with this combo. J.C. Whitney has crossmember motor mounts for the old Fords and trans mounts, too. I don't know if the trans mount would work with the 4x4 but you never know 'til you ask.
