Auto Lamps - Would like to add feature

I have a 2001 F-250, standard light switch with fog lamp multi-funtion switch; If I forget to turn off lights they stay on!!!! I understand that it was not unitl 2002 that Ford added an auto light option....I would like to install this upgrade but wanted to know if this is possible, I would just like the lights to turn off automaticly if vehicle is turned off....perhaps it could wait a few minutes then turn off....does anyone know how to make this change.....I would like to by the 2002 parts but not sure if my 2001 wire harness will work or what parts I need....does anyone know how to do this?????

I don't know what parts you would need, but my 1998 F150 XLT has that option. It is great. I have never manualy turn my lights on since I bought it. There is a dial beside the normal head light switch that you turn the auto feature on with and to set how long the lights stay on after you turn off the truck. Good luck finding the parts. It will be a worth while option.

I have a 2004 F 350 and have also been inquiring about this myself. After some exhausting and extensive research i've been told that unless you intend to add daytime running lamps it is not possible without replacing the instrument cluster.

If you find another way i'd be happy to hear how to do it without using daytime running lamps. I had auto lamp on a previous vehicle and loved it.

Looking at the wiring diagrams, Autolamps requires a Central Security Module, an Autolamp Main Light Switch, and an Autolamp Sensor. You may also need a Headlamp Relay, a Park Lamp Relay and possibly a wiring harness that ties the AS to the relays and to the light switch.
Does your truck have remote entry system? If it does, then you should have the CSM and the relays already since the CSM controls the remote entry system to unlock/lock all doors and sound a panic alarm from your key fob.
FYI, the AS is located under the dash panel oval cover near the center of the dash. The CSM is located behind the dash panel on the left side. The HR and PLR are located in Auxillary relay box 3, which is behind the dash panel center.
Good luck and let us know how this turns out so that others can benefit from your experience.

For my 97 F150 Lariat I have atuo lamps but it doesn't have factory keyless entry. I actually have an aftermarket keyless entry w/ remote start.

Lariats if I am not mistaken all had Autolamps. I have not done this upgrade to Autolamps. Just trying to help out. Don't know if there have been changes to this system over the years or not. I deduced all of my information by reading the schematics for my truck which came with Autolamps.
Personally, I would like to do three lighting modifications to my truck. I want to add DRL, rewire the lights for higher working voltage levels at the headlights (there is an article on this site titled "Whiter whites and brighter brights") and make the fog lamps work with all other light modes. I have a link from another post on the DRL. Not to hard to do that one. I have also seen a post about the fog lamp modification too.

Thanks Kingranchman02, in my chiltons manual it shows there is an autolamp module wich also ties into the anti theft module. Here is the wiring diagram out of my Chilton's manual. Sorry for the bluriness.

Totally different wiring compared to my 2002 Ford F-150 Wiring Diagrams. No DRL module or Autolamp module, just relays and the light sensor. Much simpler and most likely less expensive.

That's wierd then because my manual says for Ford F150 and Expedition 97-02.

Guess that's the difference in a model year specific factory manual and a generic Chiltons covering multiple years.

It can be done in a pretty simple way.

You need to figure out if each headlight has its own wire from the switch, an easy way to check would be to look for fuses, 2 fuses, 2 wires.

You might want to illuminate brake running lights too.

To do it properly, you will need 1 relay for each lamp circuit. The park lamps are all on the same circuit.

I would tap into the accessory wire in the ignition harness for your battery voltage to trip the relays.

Tie that wire into the coil side of each relay, and the switch side of the relay.

wire the ground of the coil sides of the relays to a good ground.

run the output terminal of each relay to each circuit you want to light up.

when the relay sees 12V on the coil, the switch will close lighting up your circuits.

finding the wires for the individual circuits may be the hardest, but you can probably get all of them at the switch.

If you don't mind me asking where did you get your factory manual at?
