bigger exhaust

I just installed the downpipe from Banks (pipe #52103) last weekend, that attaches directly to the ford factory elbow. I then installed an exhaust meant for a 94 powerstroke that was 4" from the downpipe back. The turbo spools up much quicker than before. I have not yet turned up the fuel or adjusted my wastegate, but do not have any problem getting an instant 7 psi (factory waste-gate setting) on my boost gauge. The ATS elbow is the best for flow, but the Banks downpipe that retains the v-band clamp at the elbow is much easier to deal with. Some have said that you still have the elbow restriction, so the new downpipe only won't really make a difference, but my experience now says otherwise. I plan on turning up my fuel a little and adjusting the waste-gate to 10 psi. Hopefully my EGT's will be a little lower next time I pull my trailer with a little more power also.

I bought the pipe in August. It used to be a piece of their stinger exhaust system that they no longer offer. They do not show it on their website. You will have to call them and give them the part number (52103) so they will sell you one. I live in Utah and the cost to my door was just over $100, if I remember correctly.
You will also need another bend to attach to the bottom of this pipe to get the exhaust pointing towards the rear of the pickup. I had a 3" 45 deg mandrel bend that I ended up cutting down to maybe a 35-40 deg bend to get things to line up. I did not have to cut the firewall lip. I also took of the heat wrap from the factory pipe and used hose clamps to cover as much of the new piece as possible.

In order to upgrade your turbo housing, you need to buy the turbo upgrade kit from ATS. It runs about 500.00. You get a new exhaust housing, wastegate housing and downpipe. I just installed it recently with a 4 inch exhaust. The response was noticeably improved. Worth the money. My turbo is set at about 8psi boost and I have a turbo calibrated pump and ram air to balance out the system.

I had a wastegated system. When you buy the kit, they ship you a new housing that has been improved (earlier boost). ATS also claims that some housings were slightly different from year to year so to ensure the proper fit, they ship a new housing. I contemplated just changing the wastegate housing but it was easier/just as much work to pull the turbo and replace everything on the bench first. Even that was a royal pain.
