Gas vs Diesel? (4X4 Project)

What should I do if the vegas kids want to run a diesel rig against our gas one? I would think we would clean their plow, but have no experence in this.

Anyone know?

Without Mr. Banks the diesel would still be just an engine for delivery vans . . . But his engines are slow to react - they take a while to spool up.

I was more wondering how that heavy front end plowed through the mud - I know they are helpless in the slick as 2wd - do they perform with a gas rig in 4wd?

All depends on the engine & the setup. The IDI Fords may have the rpm to do what's needed, but not the hp. A Cummins has cheap hp potential, and can get the rpm's we need, but they are pricey. A DT360 IH, is nearly identical to the Cummins, except the overall size makes it hard to fit in. An early powerstroke may be about the best bang for the buck, but power is expensive. Either case, it's an increase of 300 pounds over the 460. They dont need Mr. Banks to get good power. A fairly modded diesel can stomp a 460.

You think so? There may be things (other than stink!) that a diesel would do better than a 460, but zero to 60 in a foot of mud?

Also, what is IDI? And I expect we are talking about late model stock trucks - maybe with some special computer programming but without any internal mods.

IDI is the 6.9 & early 7.3's which means InDirect Injection. Maybe with a diesel's added torque, you could run a higher set of gears & get more wheel speed, considering it was not a stock diesel. Stock, as in, stock fuel & hp level. For reasonably cheap you could get a Cummins to 500hp & 900+ pounds of torque. Getting it to the ground costs the bigger bux.

Hmmn,

How about a we just add a 250 shot of the juice to the 460, and call it even?

Most likely they'ed have a propane injection setup anyways...this would just be evening the playing field some

Plus we could route it where it'd be hard to find...and say "'gee, don't know what that is"

Ofcourse they'll read this thread....

Maybe that second 460 spare motor will somehow end up in the bed driving the rear wheels while the 460 under the hood drives the front wheels

Remember, we have to meet the same street class requirements - -

Like I asked, has anyone actually driven a diesel 4X4 in the mud? How did it compare to a gas rig?

I used to have one, but I didnt go in too deep of mud with only 33's. It sprayed the mud quite well though. You can tell the front is heavy too.

My rig (diesel) is a blast in the mud, i`ve got 305/75/16 BFG with a leveling kit that raised me up 4 in. in the front and added a leaf in the rear for 2 in.I`ve had my tires almost buried (in height) with mud and pulled right thru. I can`t see any diff in gas vs diesel other than weight. I go to Tahoe fairly regularly and it loves the snow, forest, and it`ll climb anything with all that torque. The only time I didn`t enjoy was down at Pismo in the sand,I didn`t get stuck but it was close
anyway that`s my ramblin,time for a suds
