paint colour for a '49 pickup
g'day fellas,
Hoping you may be able to help with some info on a standard paint colour used on a 1949 Ford pickup. Apologies in advance for the description, but the colour is a lightish mid-green. I don't know if there were more than one shade that fits this description for that model year.
I don't believe these trucks were brought into Australia at that stage, so I'm having some trouble finding a local paint shop that has any codes to use.
Does anyone have any pics, or know where I could go to get some more help.
Thanks in advance.
Paul

According to my reference, 1949 Ford trucks came in 5 colors and listed for each is the Ford paint order number:
Med. Luster Black code M-1724
Vermillion (red) code M-1722
Meadow Green code M-14283
Birch Gray code M-14286
Chrome Yellow code M-14301
Hope this helps a little, but I'm afraid I don't have anything more to add - just repeating the material in front of me. My 48 was the same color as your 49 and had brown as the complimentary interior color for headliner, visor, seat, etc. - tim

Hello Paul, and welcome. My book shows only one green. "Meadow Green" (paint code # M-14283). It also says that "Arabian Green" was renamed "Meadow Green" in 1949. Sorry I don't have any pictures, but maybe someone else can help you there. You could also do a search on E-bay for 1949 Ford paint chips. Hope this helps.

I too am going to paint my '50 F-1 Meadow Green. A couple of good pictures of this color can be found in Don Bunn's book "Ford F Series Pickup Trucks, 1948-1956. Check out pages 56 and 62. Also, Colorite will send you a paint chip of what they say is Meadow Green for $10. Thier website is www.color-ite.com. Also, painters tell me PPG can supply it.

Fantastic,
Thanks very much guys. I had a good look through the net but couldn't find much, so I might go and check out the book that someone mentioned.
FYI, I'm not actually restoring a F1, but a '56 Ford Mainline. This was an Australian only utility version of the Ford Sedan of the same year. It'll be running a '64 390 with a Toploader and a 9". If you want to see what one looks like, go to the following link (this isn't my car by the way)
http://www.mradmc.com.au/55mainline.html
It took me forever to decide on a colour, and when I finally did, I couldn't find anyone locally who had any info.
Thanks again for your help. Catch you later.

I want one of those! That would have to be the coolest strange (in a good way) old Ford if it were here in California. I remember seeing lots of "different" vehicles down under a long time ago. That shot reminded me of my first shipping job as a cadet on a US flagged cargo ship in '76. Thanks!

jimt, the serial number on that ebay truck (253,758) seems high for a '49 and given that serial nos. ran consecutively from 49- Sept 51, I'd say that truck is more likely a '50. There was a second green that year ('50) called Palisade Green - M 14341.... anyone have better info out there? - tim

I think I've found the ANSWER. PPG, a major US paint supplier, has a formula for Meadow Green based on the M-14283 paint code for a 1949 Ford. I had them mix me up 3 ounces of it and I think it's the real thing. The PPG # is DAR40481 ("Meadow Green"). The store here is Nashville, TN could possibly ship it to you. Their phone number is (615) 726-0361, ask for Lewis.

I have always been told that a 50 doesn't have the finger indentions above the glovebox.. A buddy of mine has a 50 panel and his didnt have this. Mine is regeistered as a 50 but I tend to think its a 49 because of this difference. Maybe its a late 49 model ???

Thanks for the compliment....But I have really beatin it up since then... I will be posting newer pics soon on the page..

I have never thought of that.. But that very well could be the case.. That panel truck is what got me to buy mine.. Helped a buddy through high school build his from ground up.. I remember spendng the night in his garage getting the motor in it and rewiring it. Anyone know if this could be a difference between the 49 and 50?

Yellowbeast, I just came across this website of a 50. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you should see a shot of the cab interior. If I'm not mistaken, it has the finger indent for the glovebox....the mystery continues.....let me know what you think - tim
