torque converter troubles?

When I start my truck (55 F100/302 C.I.D.) it sounds like something is rubbing in the fly wheel/torque converter area. It start out squeeking like a bad water pump, if I increase the idle the sound deminishes. Any thoughts on what it could be, what are the simptons of a bad torque converter?
Thanks in advance

Jaye

I don't pretend to be a tranny/converter expert but here is what I would do. Get the truck up on stands and very stable where you can get under it with the motor running safely. On a hoist is better yet. You didn't say what tranny you have but remove any inspection cover you can. Check for loose torque converter bolts or flexplate bolts. Disable the ignition or fuel system and have someone crank engine without starting it to further check for things that don't look right. Then start it to listen for the noises. Converter performance can be tough to diagnose. Cracked flexplates can make weird noises too. Hope this helps.
