Rear Hatch Glass SHATTERED

Just closed the rear gate as usual, nothing in the back of the escape at all and it just basically exploded. Glass all over the interior AND all over the outside. I'm guessing it was stressed in some way and just decided to let go.

Any ideas?

You're right.. I was thinking of the explorer recall...

It's possible one of the hinges gave way... or the latch came out of alignment somehow... or maybe a sudden change in temeperature plus the stress of closing it.. it's hard to tell.

I don't really know what else to tell you...

Guess I'll just have to pay to get it replaced and hope it doesn't happen again.

I've seen that happen on many different vehicles, really don't know what causes it other than some kinda stress. The most recent was in my father in law's chrysler minivan, it had a window blow out at highway speeds just driving at normal speeds on a smooth road in the summer, everyone in the van swore that it sounded like the window was shot out due to an explosive sound that it made. Glass can do some strange things.

On my Escape the rear hatch was making lots of creaking and rattling noises, sounded like it was flexing over uneven surfaces. It sounded like the hatch was being stressed and flexing. I adjusted the latch and lubed a few parts and the noise has all disappeared.

Yeah, I figure it was stressed in some way. This one sounded like a shot also, it just suprised me.

I've found that the two small rubber stoppers (one at each lower corner) that keep
the window from hitting metal can come off fairly easy. You might check and make sure there still in place.

Our insurance ended up covering it. They came out and replaced it next day.
