Pull the engine to replace the rear main seal?

I'm going to get an oil leak fixed and My mechanic thinks its the rear main seal he said unless you he can get the oil pan off with out removing the engine it's only going to be $100-$150 but if he has to pull the engine it'll be $400 plus I was looking at the pan and it looks like it should come off with out the motor being pulled I just wanted to know just in case he trys to take atvantage of me (new mechanic) and just to get idea of what its going to cost its a 292 v8 4x2 its a 60'. Hope I'm not asking to many questions for being here 2 days. Any help would be greatly appricated!!!!

Pull the engine to replace the rear main seal?

The oil pan on a 60 should be completely accessable from underneath. The 53-64 trucks mounted their engines from the front and the transmission so the pan should drop right down since there is no crossmember under the motor. The only problem would be access to the front pan bolts due to the mount. You could take a look and see if it is in the way. Unless the truck has sat up for some time a rear main seldom goes bad. Leakage from the rear is sometimes the result of worn main bearings. Compare your oil pressure to factory specs..If it has an idiot light, Does it flash when the truck is warm and at idle? If it does you may need an overhaul.Replacing the seal if the engine needs bearings would only be a temporary fix. Also look close it could be the valve covers, sending unit, oil pan or intake manifold leaking from up top. Good Luck Travis
