Anyone read the Diesel Power article on the 6.0 they pumped up?

Just got my DP mag yesterday and was blown away by the article where they compare how easy it is to bump up power on a diesel vs. a gasser. They use an F150 with a 5.4 and an '06 6.0 PSD and dyno them after every mod.

Bottom line was the 6.0 pulling 485HP and 789ft lbs at the rear wheels with just an intake mod and a stacked tuner set-up. No exhaust mods, no nothin' else...

Wow...

It's a great mag that I recommend to all enthusiasts of diesels...

diesel_dan,

Yep easy to bump up power with a tuner. But how long the engine will hold together by only doing this mod is a totally differnt story.

As the old saying goes, If your gonna play, you gotta pay. There are no cheap race cars out there. Racing motors and vehicles can get expensive fast.

You're soooo right.... (been there and done that race-car thang). My 6.0 is staying stock, btw.

The article really doesn't talk about shortened lifespan, or if they even had a problem with the 6.0 they tuned, and it certainly doesn't say anything about voiding one's warranty...!

I occasionally see other posters that favor non-Ford makes throwing out numbers that supossedly show how great their brand of diesel is, citing the easy-to-make power, etc. Thought it was an interesting bit of real tested data (dyno'd numbers) on our 6.0s...

I'm calling BS to DP magazine on this one.

We've been milking these things till the heads blow right off of them as far as tuning is concerned, and never gotten above 444 rwhp. Typical hottest tunes run in the 400-420 range, with some struggling to break 400 on the newer 05/06/07 trucks.

There are SEVERAL people on this website who have been to many of the same dyno events as me and some of which have ran my tuning, some others tuning, who can attest to the fact that is pure, rotten dripping BS. There simply is not 485 horses worth of air in the stock compressor wheel nor 485 horses of fuel in a 135mm injector.

There is likewise another SCT dealer here on this site that I'm sure will attest to the same thing, if Jody or Diane from DP-Tuner is reading this.

Warranty?!? What's a warranty?!? Oh yeah, that's the thing I lost just a month after I picked mine up. They're too fun not to tune up!!

Without fully reading the article it's hard to know what they did, but it's hard to see it on a stock truck with no exhaust mods. Not saying they didn't attempt it. Here's some questions. What type of dyno? What tune? What was the correction factor. What effects on the engine afterwards?

My truck has the following:

PCM code no reflashes- HBX2
gauges
Suncoast stg III rebuild kit
SCT custom trans shifting Econo/race tune built just for me.
AFE mega intake system
Fluidamper
PML's
Panhard bar
Spearco intercooler
headstuds
4" MBRP dual exhaust
Schaeffers oil
fuel additive always

Dynoed on a dynojet 248
398.7/793.4

IMHO,those are realistic numbers

Premods- with just an intake, exhaust and a tune- 353/609

Diane

On edit: realisticly to acheive those numbers you need fuel.....

Please don't shoot the messenger...

Here's a couple of answers straight from the article:

It was done with DP and Granatelli Motor Sports at GMS's shop on their Mustang dyno.

They stacked a Fuego Flash Tuner and a Big G Mileage Miser (never heard of either b4 this).

Their own GMS cold air intake was the only other mod.

Maybe it comes down to some advertising for GMS then...?

Most likely.

There are lots of ways they could have fooled the dyno, ie correction factors such as Diane mentioned, or if it was an Eddy current they could have fooled with the loading.

One way or another, something is fishy.

And for those that read that article and don't know the "game" GMS or someone is gonna sell a lot of tuners and a lot of people are gonna be severly disappointed. Hopefully DP mag will provide some details or make a disclaimer of somekind because those in the really hardcore performance circles that KNOW the 6.0 inside and out know that those numbers aren't realistic.....especially not on that year model truck without some kind of major modification.

LOL--nobody's gonna shoot the messenger Dan. This has been posted on a couple of the diesel performance forums and they all cry foul. Information is our aim here.

Not to mention that Granatelli Motor Sports hasn't had the best press or results in the last number of years.

And diesel_dan i don't think we were trying to shoot the messenger just the writer of the Advertising piece (oops article ).

I also heard the SCT badges were worth 5 hp apiece just for having them stuck on your truck........

from what i have heard regarding diferent kind of dyno's, mustang dynos typically read 10+% LOWER than dynojets, which makes the dp numbers even more suspect..

Just laying it all out there. I can at least keep it from bouncing all over the place going down the track.
