How to change PSOM and where to buy one?
I still haven't figured out my stranny/speedo problem and haven't been able to find a used cluster. I have the old cluster out but can't figure out how to get the psom out. Any how-to articles out there? Will a Haynes manual help any? And where can I get a new psom if I have to go that route? Thanks.
BTW, it's a '96 F-150 4x4 w/ a 351W. Thanks.

PSOM = programmable speedometer/odometer module. It is the actual speedometer in the dashboard.
That gauge cluster is actually a 3 peice assembly once you get it out and apart. The speedo/odo is one and that is the PSOM. I don't know what T18skyguy is talking about when he says "directly behind the speedo but way up high"
You can look in the tech articles section of this website to find an article regarding installing a tachometer in a tachless gauge cluster for this year vehicle. It will give you instructions on how to take the gauge cluster out.
The PSOM is expensive....I would not replace it unless you know that it is the problem.
From your earlier posts, it does not sound like the PSOM is the problem...for two reasons...
1. Your 96 should have the updated PSOM that wasn't prone to failure like the older ones...
2. Your truck is not exhibiting the normal symptoms of a bad PSOM.
A bad PSOM will cause a dead spot where the vehicle doesn't want to run at 2-3 mph...and it'll try to die on you. Also, it will flutter and in my case, at 65 mph the speedo needle would bounce around and push past 85 and set off the speed limiter and cut the engine.

It is real easy to change, if you have the cluster out take the screws out from around the front edge and the back will come off. Then it is very easy to take it the rest of the away out, just unplug the ribbon and wiring plug and take out the two screws. Pull up and it will unplug from the speedometer.
You can buy a cluster with a PSOM in it from just about any salvage yard and take the PSOM out of it.
CAUTION:
The instrument cluster requires special handling to avoid damaging internal components. The cluster MUST be kept FACE UP or in the in-vehicle position. Leaving the cluster face down may result in a loss of dampening fluid used in the gauges. The lost fluid could stain the cluster face or result in excessive pointer waver.

Here is a photo of the PSOM, this one is out of a 1995:

I think subford is correct about the PSOM's being the same. I have two 95 tach clusters and the assemblies have a '94 part #, but the individual gauges all have a '92 part #.
