When your solenoid clicks, is it one click, or many rapid clicks?

thats a good place to start. If you have a dead battery,or loose/dirty cables, thats when you get that rapid fire clicking. One single loud click is either a bound up starter, locked up motor, or on some occasions, loose starter bolts. My 81 is rough on gas mileage(10-11) so I would say it probably wouldnt survive an emissions test either.
