4.0L thrust bearing weirdness

4.0L thrust bearing weirdness
I took the crank out of my 4.0L yesterday. It only has half a thrust bearing! On the block side, it's your average thrust bearing, with a part on each side that holds the crank in place. But in the cap, it's a standard bearing! I've never seen this before. Is it supposed to be like this?
