66 Ford Truck Starters

I have a 1966 F260 352 Ford Truck. The (I think) original starter went bad, so I went and bought a new one. It worked for about 5 starts and then the same as the original, the winding sound occured. The teeth on the fly wheel look to be in good shape. Do you think shims would work or maybe the starter is under rated?

George any Ford 3 bolt starter should work. Are you saying that the starter mortor is spining while you are attempting to crank the truck but the engine isn't turning?

Is the starter "spinning" but not engaging the flywheel? If the starter spins, but you turn the ignition on and off several times, does the starter keep spinning, or does it eventually crank the engine at random? All kinds of possibles with this one. A long shot, does starter face connect to the engine flat and square? Had a 57' chevy that had only a couple of worn flywheel teeth, the rest were fine. It usually started, but every now and then, it seemed to come to rest at these random points and I had to repeatedly turn the ignition on and off. That seemed to "jar" it just enough to catch.. Let us know...

Yes, the starter is spinning, but the engine isn't turning. Maybe I do have a few worn teeth on the fly wheel in a remote spot. I will get a buddy to help and turn the crank to look for worn down teeth.
