Installing the tow command on a 2006 F250

Just got a new 2006 F250 loaded except for the Tow Command. I did order the module from Ford for $500.00 big ones. The question is can I install this my self, the wires are there. Dealer install would take about 30 min. they stated.

Shouldn't be a problem. All the hooups are there to do it. Check out the Tech folder here and in 6.0 for the upfitter workup and it should help out.

Good luck!

Welcome to FTE!

I think you could probably wire the brake controller in yourself, but I've heard, and I'm hoping when you get your controller you can post back and confirm or dispel this, that the dealer needs to program the trucks PCM (turn on some parameter) to allow communication between it and the brake controller.

You also need to change the brake master cylinder. They are different with the intergrated brake controller.

Installing the controller itself is a few minute job. All the connectors are there, j8ust mount it and plug it in. Changing the master cylinder is quite a bit harder, and reprogramming the computer to operate the controller is impossible without the right tool.

Why would I need a new master cylinder? My trailer has electric brakes.

This is why Casey mentioned the master cylinder. This is from Dieselmann's site. He's kind enough to allow us to re-post his info as long as we give him credit, Thanks Dieselmann!

Installing TowCommand on 05-07 F-Series:
There is now a kit available to install TowCommand trailer braking system on trucks that were not originally equiped at the factory. For diesel and all dual rear wheel applications use kit 5C3Z-19H332-BA. For gasoline trucks with single rear wheels use kit 5C3Z-19H332-AA. Broadcast Message 4065, 4643, 4937, 5883. If a TowCommand brake controller is dealer installed on an 05 truck, it may not work correctly unless a master cylinder with a brake pressure transducer is installed, and the instrument cluster reconfigured to recognize the TowCommand. Broadcast Message 4642, 4928.

The kit will come with a new master cyclinder that you must install so that it has the pressure transducer you can install the brake controller yourself the wiring is allready in place but you still need to have the dealer program the instrament cluster with there programing tool it is all spelled out in the instructions that come with the kit after they program the cluster it will have all the functions just like if it came from the factory
