Gremlin in the 7.3

2001 f-250 with 7.3 with 125k. Takes about three trys to start. New batterys, new CTS, new inj. pump. Dealer has had it three times and says its fixed each time. Runs for several days then starts getting hard to start for several days then will not start at all. Does not seem to matter if it sits overnite. Does the same thing after it finally start and gets shut down. No smoke on starting. Going to take it back to dealer again I guess.

The 7.3 does not have an injection pump. It uses Hydrolic Actuated Electronic controlled injectors.

Ok What ever its called I replace the high pressure oil pump that controls the injectors. This still did not fix the problem.

Is this random occurences or is it the first few day after you get it back from the dealer.

What was their reason for replacing the HPOP? Have seen them replace some only to find out it was the ICP or IPR that was the troublemaker

Quick test: unplug the ICP and turn the key, with the icp unpluged the PCM commands the IPR to provide 750psi to the injectors. if this works the it is most likely a bad icp.

ICP = injection control perssure sensor - front driverside just inboard of the valve cover

B4 you start it next time check the oil level in the HPOP. It should be about an inch from the top.

I,m starting to think they replace the pump because they did not know what else to do. When I have picked up the truck from the dealer it seems to work for about three or four days before it starts doing the same thing again. This has happend twice now. The first time they replace the hight pressure oil pump. The second time they replace the cam position sensor even though I told them I had just replaced it. Then they said it must be the batterys and replace them. I now have it back at the dealer. I guess I need to show them these answers to see if it would help them.

Maybe you should find a knowledgable diesel mechanic. Just a thought. I've never had a start, or run issue with mine, except for when the injector harness plug came undone on passengers side. Fixed it myself (both sides), no problem.
Good Luck

another thing to look at is how long does it take the Oil gauge on the dash to respond?

> 3 or 4 seconds is an early warning sign of the LPOP wearing. If it cant feed the HPOP = no fuel from injectors = No start

That's kind of where I was heading with my previous post. "Check HPOP level b4 your next start up".

There is a check valve that keeps the oil in the HPOP. If it's sticking the HPOP will drain thus the long cranking time b4 the engine fires. The LPOP is re-filling the HPOP reservior.

The next check would be the LPOP pressure test.

Now the dealership is telling me the battery they installed about a year ago is bad. They replaced it for free and I picked it up this morning. Hope this fixes it. I guess the computer will not fire if the voltage is below a certain level when cranking. I am not sure how to test for this outside of changing batterys to see if it starts.
