I have an 06 PSD The only logical reason for the hour meter that I can think of is if your your truck idles excessively it keeps track so you don't miss the oil change interval.
Almost exclusivly for maintenance purposes. If you look in your owners manual you will see recomendations for oil changes stated in miles and hours. Just like PA said, it's handy for vehicles that idle allot.
What gauges do you have that offer an engine hour meter? That'd be nice to have.
Back at my old job (2001) fleet Dept at a Electric Utility, we use to put an Hour meter in every new vehicle we bought. Then GM or Ford made it standard and the other manufacturers followed. As stated above we did internal costing based on Hours.
