Output shaft seal

Output shaft seal
The other day I noticed a small puddle of fluid underneath my '99 expy with 4wd. I crawled underneath and saw that it looks like it is leaking from the output shaft seal.
Is there anything special to replacing these seals? I'm thinking 1.) detach the drive shaft from the rear axle 2.) pull out the shaft. 3.) pull out the old seal and put in the new seal. 4.) reassemble.
How do I check the fluid level in the transfer case? What kind of fluid does it use?
Thanks.

You have the process down right. Distortion (by prying, picking, etc.) of the steel portion of the seal is necessary for removal. You need to try not to distort it when putting back in. If you've done it before, you know the drill. Otherwise, just be careful tapping it in around the outside edge of the seal. Make sure it seats firmly against the tail shaft housing.
