Post Transmission; 3 speed manual

Hello,

I just bought a 66 F-100 long bed with a 352 engine and 3 speed transmission. The transmission is shot and I would like to replace it from the junkyard or with a more modern unit. What is the designation of the transmission? Will a newer unit fit in? Recommendations? I will use the truck in everyday driving and Home Depot runs.

Thanks!

Do you have the warranty tag information? That will tell us what tranny you have, assuming it and the tranny are original to the truck. Most likely it is a Ford 3 speed, and they tend to be common. The warranty tag will tell us for sure. If you post all the information, we can decode the entire tag for you

Have you thought of going to an automatic trans? Get a parts truck up thru '79 with a C6 trans, check all the past posts here on how this is actually an easy swap. To lose the clutch pedal in my truck when I went to a C4, I used the factory spacer parts from the '72 parts truck pedal assembly, keeping my '66 brake pedal. It truly was a direct bolt in swap. A hint: my truck had the three speed and it came out easily from underneath, but the C4 would NOT fit up the same way! The clearence looked like it would, but the opening was slightly too small, no mater what I did. My factory crossmember was rivited and there was no problem drilling the 4 rivits out and replacing with hardened bolts. This way, you can install and remove an automatic in the truck without pulling the motor just by unbolting this crossmember..

Thanks for the reply. I have little documentation on the truck so I don't know what a warranty tag is. I work in a shipyard and it has been passed through a few owners; the last is in jail. The Vehicle ID is: F10YR832457.

Anyplace where I could find other codes, etc?

Regards,

Pete

Appreciate the reply but I don't think I would like to get into this involved of a swap. I'll stick to a manual trans if it can be found.

Regards,

Pete

Pete: Your VIN breaks out like this:
F10: = F-100 series
Y: = 352 Engine
R: = San Jose CA plant
832457 = 83xxxx, March, 1966
The warranty plate is the plate on the driver's door near the bottom. It looks like a VIN plate, but isn't because the plate just pops off.
That plate has more information on it, and from that we can give you more details about the tranny and more.
Can you post it?

Pete, There was only one 3 spd tranny offered as far as I know, so finding a replacement shouldnt be a problem. Take some measurements like of the length, the position of the arms, etc. Just tell the guy at the yard that you need a Ford 3 spd tranny. :-x06
